I personally would fix it myself...as uniacidz said, can cost between 200-300 or up to 500 depending the condition of the head and what needs doing.
Mechanic can charge $1000+ for a good and proper job. If you decide to sell the car, put it in the For Sale section with pictures and also a definite price. I wouldn't pay more then $1000 for an EL with possible head gasket problems and few dints and dings in the car.

Have a look at your engine oil and see if has gone milky, check your overflow bottle and see if it has oil in the water. Also look around the engine bay to find any spots of possible leaking hoses...back of the water pump, side of the block, thermostat housing, any hoses etc.

I know you're in Vic, but I replaced my brothers motor altogether with a good condition one which only cost $400 with warranty.. We did the head gasket but he blew it up not long after and it ended up costing heaps more having to have the head milled and all.

if its really that bad your probably better off wrecking it if you feel your not going to get much for it whole

If you've got half a clue, you can do a headgasket for about 120bux (70 AU MLS gasket, 50 for bolts) in parts, then whatever the shop charges you to machine the head flat. Anywhere between 50 to 100 for that. You could even buy an ebay kit with a normal graphite/composite type gasket with bolts for like 80 bux delivered. I wouldnt even think about wrecking it out either, theres not a lot people will pay money for other than a motor and gearbox, one if which is in need of repair. Lots of time and effort for very little gain. I'd have a crack at doing the head gasket, if it is in fact the problem. |
