Does anyone know the cause of EL headlights turning yellow? Is it dirt or just cheap plastic? it seems also that you would have to pull the whole front bumber off just to pull lens off.

Welcome to EF/EL headlights, common prob, plenty of threads about this, someone just used Brasso to do his, there used to be a doco on this before i think. The crap is on the outside of lens, can also be sand papered off.

Yep just sand it off with something fine (1200 or 2000 grade seems to be the norm), then a bit of cut and polish and should be okay. Result depends on how much time you spend doing it.
There is also a few other plastic polishing products like Plexus or Brasso like bombed said, these also do a fairly decent job. I used kitten cut and polish #3 on mine with 1500 grade sandpaper and after about 6 or 7 applications it has turned out pretty good. It still has a bit of cloudyness to it but no way is it as bad as it was, so am happy with it. Hope that helps.

Thanks, I thought i was inside. Ive just been out trying window cleaning which is working to an extent. Do you mean Brasso Metal polish or is there brasso plastic polish. ill get some fine sand paper tomorrow and give it a shot. What causes the yellowness? if its on the outside,

the headlights cause rainwater to dry too quickly on the lens, which causes the yellowing. I did mine a few months back, polished them with toothpaste then buffed out the cloudyness with a buffer and meguires scratch x.

with toothpaste? ok... Well I will try anything, i got all the yellow out with 5star window spray cleaner, but still some cloudy blobs will try that scratch x stuff u mentioned.

Have you found that the light output is not as good when they are yellow and has it inproved when they are cleaned.

my lights are yellow as f**k, i have to use highbeam when theres no street lights, i cleaned bout 50% of s**t off yesterday and work heaps better.

I had the same problem and tried everything! i got em looking good for a while but they just went back to the way they were if not worse. i rang my local FORD service department at NUFORD, and they actually fix the discolouration there. They scraped of the yellow cloudy layers with a machine i think and promise that they will never discolour again. It only cost me $40 and they look brand new, and that was 2 years ago and they still look great. I recomend getting this done, just call your local FORD Service Department. It works and its a s*it load cheaper than replacing them.

40 dollars, not too bad coming from dealer. I managed to get all the s**t off by using wet and dry, which was mentioned on the orginal post. looks like new again. Thanks for advice.
