Hi everyone,

Just after a bit of guidance regarding an issue I have recently encountered with a newly purchased 98 el falcon, When it starts up it idles on 2000rpm and doesn't come down at all its also blowing black smoke, I have noticed when I disconnect the vacuum hose from the map sensor connected to the intake manifold the revs come down and idles ok but still very blutery when I place my thumb over the vacuum pipe on the intake manifold it idles good but still blows a little dark, has anyone experienced this or have any suggestions on what it could be before I start pulling it apart.
Cheers.

Check the vacuum tube going from your manifold to the map, mine was cracked (small crack) and it stuffed the idle up and a bit of black smoke to. I'm not saying this is it but may be the cause.

If you have access to a spare MAP, replace it and the vac hose and see how it goes.

Thanks for the tips I replaced the map and vac hose didn't change a thing can anyone tell me the bolt sequence for tightening the intake manifold and also at what torque setting I found the bolts have came quiet loose and I have seen on some threads here that it is a very common fault that people miss any help would be great, also if it makes any difference its only missing under low acceleration such as when trying to maintain a constant speed.
Cheers.

Torque setting is 20Nm. Start in the middle and work your way out in a spiral sequence, then recheck all bolts.

Ok so tightened intake bolts cleaned throttle body and inspected ics which looks a little dirty filter has gone stiff and crumbly other than cleaning the ics is there much else I can check or any test I could perform to find the culprit.

Check all your vac lines, including the booster line.

ok so I checked vac lines and are all ok, I replaced ics and ecu from my other el with no results,
just to go through the problem again when I start it jumps to 2000rpm when i give it a rev it sticks at 2500rpm give it another and it will sit on 2750rpm once I put it in drive idles at 1500 and is very pushy I have found disconnecting the ics drops revs by 500 but will blow smoke and removing vac line from map brings revs down to 750, whilst driving theres a miss under light acceleration put the foot down and its fine im a bit stuck on what to do next maybe crank angle sensor??

Still sounds like it has a vac leak. Have you tried another MAP sensor?

Wind the idle screw out till it doesn't touch the throttle arm, start it and disconnect the ISC, car should stall. If it still idles and high then you have a Vac leak.

While idling, pour water olng the BBM manifold gasket abd see what happens. Also pour water around all your vac lines. If the idle drops then you have found your vac leak. Careful how much water you pour, you don't want to drown the dizzy or coil.

nah haven't had it off at all. i brought the car about a week ago with this problem. I was suggested a test of the brake booster I the idea was if i start the engine hold the brake down and turned engine off the brake should hold if it slowly pushes up its a sign of a leak in the constant pressure chamber of the booster sure enough the pedal slowly pushed up would a leak in the pressure chamber of the booster cause my high idle problem?

my bet is the gasket between the bbm and head. had it happen to a mate and i used water to find it which was not ideal, but did make a hissing sound aswell worth looking at i think.
