Just chased a fault to a stripped distributor drive thread on the idler shaft, not the dizzy gear but the metal thread on the idler shaft that drives the dizzy gear.

Seems to have collapsed with pieces no bigger than a grain of rice.

Has anyone experienced this type of failure before.

Any hints on getting another.

aux shaft failures seem to be getting more common

how many k's on the motor? have u skipped any oil changes?

205 thousand, oil every 10 thou with BP Visco 5000.

What got me was the plastic gear on the dizzy was perfect.

Timing chain has seen better days but still in place.

Fragments look like fatigue failure!

I have heard of them failing on EF EL and AU....

Yes, put new dizzy in before Christmas. Internal screws were all loose and vane wore on sensor.

Replaced that one.

Neither had drag in shaft and neither had damage to the dizzy gear.

I have seen dizzy gears or oil pump drive shaft go with high volume oil pump but never the steel idler shaft gear.

It looks like it was crushed with a sledge hammer.

? did you buy an aftermarket dizzy????
ive had a aux shaft fail and i put it down to a cheap a** aftermarket dizzy..
it pretty much ate away the gear on the shaft..
also the gear on the dizzys are steel not plastic..
if they were plastic the dizzy gear would chew out instead of the aux shaft..
you can buy new shafts from ford for around $150 or you can use a second hand shaft from any ea to au engine

there can be bigger issues with these aux shafts failing.
the engine that i had ,after the failure it was pulled down to be re built and had scoring on the bottom end bearings from fine metal being pumped back through the engine..
