Ok just bought a timing chain kit and new harmonic balancer for my EL i6. Apart from coolant, new "O" rings for the water pump heater hose and puller for the harmonic balancer what else do i need to do this kit and any tips? I know all about the TDC so dont worry about that.

Gaskets for the cover, Chain Guides, O-ring for the tensioner (all in one kit for $100)
Buy Form-a-Gasket #3 Buy RTV Blue You don't have to remove the pump to do the chain.

Have you got the O'ring for the timing cover to block???
There should be 3 O'rings for the timing chain tensioner, 1 big one and 2 small ones the same size. You may need a tool to remove and refit the tensioner assembly, as well as resetting the tensioner. If you don't reset the tensioner correctly, you will damage the engine block at the journal/bore where the auxillary shaft ( the one that drives the dizzy and oil pump ), runs, I have seen it happen a few times. So, becareful.

It has the 2 o rings, large aluminium washer, 1 top rubber gasket, 2 paper gaskets (dont know why 2!), crank seal, 2 large chain guides, 1 small chain guide, chain tensioner and chain. I have the tensioner remover (the tensioner cover) I guess i just need coolant and possibly a new o ring for the heater hose on the wter pump. Whats the 3rd o ring for you were talking about as i only got 2 (1 thick and 1 thin same about 15mm diameter)

...well it goes on the timing cover but ends up there That one is about an 1" in diameter, and is of a thicker cross section than the one for the outer of the tensioner one.

Okies i must have it. i guess out of the 2 supplied one for that as u showed and 1 for the chain tensioner. If i need more i can get every size needed from work in a o ring kit in bot metric and imperial. That pic will be handy tho. Thanks krytox. Also i know about the tensioner release as i did my head gasket almost 2 years ago. A small allen ket and turn counter clockwise to release from memory.

And use a piece of old fuel pipe to push on the tensioner too, when you undo the tensioner.

i just found that when you remove the tensioner by the 14mm on the end the whole thing comes out. just pull it apart clean the small filter inside it, new o ring of course then , with the tensioner its self compress it back (done mine with my fingers) and fit back in ,then fit the big half of the case bolt in tighten it then a poke with a phillihps head screw driver and the refit the 14mm till firm not tight hows that sound to you guys as i have now problem using that method on a few ef,els now no fancy tools needed

The kit comes with a new tensioner.
To line up the cam gear turn the crank via the harmonic balancer (breaker bar and socket) |

You certainly did that the wrong way.........you should've left the cam sprocket on the chain with a zip-tie. The head will come off over it. You have made the job a lot harder than it needed to be.
