by rights the dizzy should be on the finish mark ?
if its not is it possible to lift the dizzy and move the rotor arm around till it is then reposition the dizzy ? or would the timing cover have to come off and move the sproket and reposition the chain right ? also if the timing was set up on the wrong cycle would it run?? at all ? |

IIRC the 98 EL's run a dimple mark on the cam sprocket instead of the earlier models 'dash', just like in the pic.
The dizzy should be pulled and repositioned, see http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=40950. The motor won't run if it's 180 degrees out. IIRC as well, the cam keyway/cutout (which the sprocket lines up with to bolt up to the cam) is in a direct line from the cam centreline and the timing mark on the sprocket (if that makes sense). Handy to know in case you have other marks on the sprocket that may confuse. Actually this thread is a nice tutorial: http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23649 , especailly as the engine is an EL hybrid.

The cam/engine timing is correct.
The dizzys can be a prick to put in because of the oil drive pin. Sometimes the pin needs to be turned slightly to get the pin in the right spot so the dizzy slides straight into the right spot. And I dont think you can really set the ignition timing based on the marks on the rotor and base cap. They are more of a guide. The ignition will have to be timing with a timing light after you first get it started. |

A base timing check should always be carried out after a dizzy reinstall.
