Well, had a bit of a crack at an intake mod last week.... Cost me only $37 for the flex tube! (I scored the pod free, but they're cheap anyway!)

how do we put this.

You realise that a K&N/Redline/Unifilter PANEL Filter will give more flow then a pod filter. The pod makes more noise to your exhaust but overall performance is less then a panel filter.

Most ESPECIALLY if you dont have it cut off from the engine bay where it will still directly suck up heat EVEN tho you have a pipe goin to the front of the bar..

Also flex tube isnt really a good thing to use as much as people say it is, the air isnt really 'flowing' through straight as suck but rippling along like what water would! IMO stil the the panel or get mandrel bent pipe and box it all off around and you might get some differences.

Funny you should say that, I've got a box to put on, I just cbf yet. $300 for a mandrel pipe, I dont think so. For the money - I'm very happy with it - its never going to be a show car! Wgaf!

yeh with the flexy pipe your could imagine the air that is rippled off the side would cause the air that is in the middle to slow down to, its like polishing your ports the smoother the sides the easyer it woull flow like ice.

Yeah, flexpipe ain't exactly the 'flowiest' of piping choices.

True again...
ESPECIALLY unboxed like you have it.
I'm sure if you back-to-backed it with your old setup, especially with the engine bay hot, the old setup would be quite a noticable improvement...

if you didn't want to pay the $180 for mandrell bent air intake, you could of made something like this for $30 bucks aswell.

jmm have tested intakes as well and have come to the conclusion that the ef stock intake is the best so why stuff around with it at all. just leave it stock as there prolly aint a great deal of diff between ef and el apart from visual. if you ask me i think there are minor gains to be had from front of car to airbox, but from airbox to throttle body i don't think there are many gains to be had.

The only thing you can do that would actually be an improvement, and not just a cosmetic mod, is to enlarge the hole into the airbox for the inlet pipe, and bellmouth it into the box.
Won't get you an 50kw, but at least it is a step in the right direction, i.e. forward...

My testing showed that the main restriction was on the mount (with the 50mm dia) on the rear of the airbox. Replace that with 80mm pipe and your ahead. Overall airbox restriciton is still less than 1inch Hg which is not much, I wouldn't spend more than $100 trying to improve it.

Little more complicated than this....

Compare a pod filter with a stock panel filter. Hack the pod open and you'll have more surface area than the panel. More potential to move air through it = more flow.

Now look at a K&N panel - better flow than pod mentioned above, because it sacrifices some of its ability to filter. a*** filter element - more flow (but also more crap gets through).

What im getting at - is that a pod, with larger surface area, is able to flow as much as a K&N panel, without sacrificing on the quality of air being drawn in. So you get the protection of a standard filter and the flow of a performance job....

But then consider brand, size, shape, filter, level of oil etc. etc. etc. It's impossible to compare apples with apples so go with whatever you're comfortable with.....

Yeah if your going to have the flex tube atleast make sure thier are some metal pipes thru thier so it does create a better flow thats what i have done with mine :P Works perfectly and also adds better durability too :)
