Has anyone else heard of this trick? Is it possible to dispaly the average and inst. fuel useage on a standard El odometer??

I'm a newb so they might just be rattling my cage....

Here's some pics that I took....

(I posted this info in this thread as well http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopi ... 1&start=20)

I've tested the service dash in my EL ghia I6 and my Uncles EF fairmont I6, both show the same info

(NOTE: all screenshots with engine OFF)

Blank screen - flashes ford after a few seconds
Image

Screen 1
Top Line: number with L after it (unbuffered - shake the car, fuel level will move)
Bottom Line: Unbuffered sender resistance

Screen 2
Top Line: Blank
Bottom Line: Engine coolant temp in **.* degrees

Screen 3
Top Line: Engine RPM **** (4 numbers)
Bottom Line: Vehicle speed KM/HR

That's great guys! Many thanks as I need to see why my EL is chewing through the petrol.
This way I can keep an eye on the inst. fuel as I go through and make the changes/adjustments from cold air inlets to new leads etc...

The cars purr's like a kitty, can spin on take-off etc(Auto wagon)but drinks like a sponge for now..

Many Thanks to all!

No problems

Just curious, what is your ltrs/100km at the moment?
If its 11 to 14.5, thats pretty normal...for normal driving.

Sorry about that FairmontXR6 ...missed the question.
Just on kms Vs Litres its running at about 15L/100 kms.

This is a huge jump up from my last wagon, EF ported, stage 2 Wade Cam with double shims , high flow cat, 3" system, Genie extractors and a high flow cold air intake.

The EL drives very well but I am starting to suspect the injectors (188K now).
If I remember right the ECU can compensate for problems and inturn masks any noticeable idle issues, whick kinda makes it harder to isolate individual faults, electrical or fuel.

Will take a Screen 6 reading if I remember soon and get a more precise fuel useage!

EFs get the best economy, usually 10 to 12 city cycle.
ELs get 12 to 14 city cycle

Hahah. Through the trip comp I installed I get 16L/100K.

All of my driving is stop start and whilst I don't have my foot to the floor or spin the wheels, I don't really take off particularly slowly.

My engine has 120 000 ks on it.

Now that you mention it... I have noticed a very rich fuel smell when I get out of the car in the last couple of weeks (though the L/100k has never been below 16 in the time I've had the trip comp).

I'll run the diag mode on the odo... though I'd assume that I'd get the same L/100 data considering the trip computer is wired to the cluster.

Any suggestions as to what could cause my high fuel consumption (apart from my driving) on a relatively low KMs car that has been serviced regularly and is exhibiting no other problems except:

Ticking noise on start up... goes away when engine is warm (I'm assuming oil is to blame for that one)

Fuel smell strong enough for the missus to notice when she got out of my car in the garage the other day.

Cheers boys.

How long has it been since the trip computer was reset?
