they put what comes out of the gun. they can't afford to have 3 or 4 different weight oils. they put what came standard in that car. not when they have a few hundred thousand kms. stuff wears out. clearances get bigger. i believe 5w both sides each hundred thousand. only if it's normal wear though. if it's been flogged you may need heavier

$28 from Big-W Penrite seems too thick. How can you say " Penrite is too thick "???????? There are plenty of Viscosity's to pick from, 5W-, 10W-, 20W-, 25W-, 30W-, 40W-, etc, etc. One that I would use in an EF/EL with 150K on it, and in good nick, would be Penrite HPR15 ( 15W60). Remember, the oil doesn't get thicker when its hot. The 60 means its the same viscosity as a straight SAE 60 weight oil when its at the test temperature, I can't remember whether its 80c or 100c. 20% of the volume of the bottle of oil is additives, the rest is the base stock oil.

Sorry, I did say seems too thick. each to their own. I should have said 'I personally think their most talked about product on this forum, HPR15 with a 15-60 rating is too thick for my application.' Nothing wrong with the product, In fact I'm sure its great. I do actualy use HPR Gas in the ute, swear by it.

The way I look it at is that when a engine is new all the sizes are correct, as it gets older the original tolerance gets lost (size increase) so a thicker oil is used to stop seeping into everything.
New engine = low weight Old engine = heavier weight But at the end of the day each to there own

Nice thread mine....6 years.
If an engine is maintained well, it can be old, and still use the correct spec weight oil. My car is 21 years old (original un-opened bottom end), and I use 15W50. Original spec oil was 15W40.
