You can also unplug the temp coolant sensor - both fans should run at full speed.
You can do this while the engine is running, but be careful with the drivebelt, etc.

thanks guys for all your help ill have a play on sunday (day off) ill let you know what i find or any other ideas you may have i can just keep her cool enough to stop it blowing coolant out the vent pipe by running my a/c but by christ does it get cold in the car speak to you guys soon thanks once again

If you turn your heater on then it should run cooler. Unplug the coolant temp sensor(it's the plug on the thermostat housing) while engine at idle, the thermo fans should turn too the fast speed. If this doesn't happen you will need to replace the 5pin relay in the relay box.

i un plugged the coolant sensor as you suggested the car went in to a fast idle approx 1500 rpm and the fans kicked in the high gear i ran the diagnostics through the cluster and at one point the car hit 98 deg and thermos did not come on so i have no idea whould a davies craig controller be a worth while investment ???

Problem Found !!!!! have blockage in the radiator which is trapping coolant in the system found the bottom part of the radiator to be stone cold which is just enough to keep the coolant sensor happy and not turn on the thermos apparentl with the cast iron block over time it creates sediment which jams up the veins in the radiator so once again thanks for all your help till next time safe motoring

Sorry for jackin  My fans stay at constant speed in the EF1 ghia V8, they do not vary as the fans do in the EF 2 ghia 6- as temp goes up or A/C is operated.High speed relays you think? These the ones near battery?
