Ok i have now caught this poor/rough idle on my EL I6. I know its not the fuel filter, fuel pump, plugs, leads, dizzy cap, dizzy button, timing, IAT and Oxy sensor as all these have been replaced. Now ive found its worse on a hot day. Its almost perfect in the mornings but if sitting in the sun on a hot day the idle is poor almost instant. Now ive been thinking of a few possibilities like MAP sensor or knock sensor as they may change with temperature. Another possibilty is the fuel reg on the injector rail. What do you think of these as a cause to the idle problem.

Try a new coolant temp and air temp sensor.
and clean the iac out and check its actually working. |

and clean the iac out and check its actually working. The air temp sensor (IAT) has already been replaced. The temp guage sits ok but i could look into it more and sorry but IAC whats that? If your refering to the ISC (idle speed controller) its working as revs change with powersteering and AC. Its more of a misfire like timing or fuel. I know that the MAP and Knock sensor does affect the timing. The MAP sensor being electronic may change with air temp. |

swap the airtemp sensor. often fixes lots.

What air temp sensor do you mean? i only know of 2, the IAT (intake air temp sensor which is new) and climate control temp sensor which id doubt is the problem.

Small vac leak?
Go over the intake manifold bolts, they have a tendency to become loose. When you say rough, are we talking almost stalling/car rocking rough? Or just a slight intermittent miss?

ell if the intake air temp is new then you have coverd alot.

You didn't mention if you replaced the coil or not????? They don't last very long where they are mounted, heat & vibes.

The intake manifold is all good. Its more of a miss but when a really hot day the miss is alot greater and doesnt relate to engine temp but engine bay temp. Basically the car is ok in the mornings but if started in the hot afternoon its worse (not driven all day) I have also replaced the capacitors in the ECU with no change. This is why im steering towards the MAP sensor or maybe a faulty knock sensor as they have not been raised in the other 1000+ posts in relation to poor or rough idle. It may even be something with the fuel reg. If anyone has a spare MAP or knock sensor i can eliminate those if no change.

I was also thinking that but its under 3 years old. Also one would think that they just fail completely instead of fade, but its worth a look. Will get another tomorrow and see what happens. |

Hi Joolz, My EL has a an annoying "rough" idle as well. I've followed a very similar path to yours, and had my fair share of the get a new [insert favorite EFI sensor here] . I gave up and sent the car to City Ford for a day, they tried everything and claim a carbon buildup problem. They did a "carbon clean" but it had no effect, their recommendation was to dismantle and manually clean.... Anyway I got my hands on a borescope and checked the inlet valve backs, clean as... then I checked the combustion chamber, hard to see but looks like a lot of carbon build up! My next step is to get some good combustion chamber cleaner and try to clean it up. Jeremy |

have you left the battery disconnected over night to see if there is a code stuck in the ecu ?

Ive ran diagnostic and nothing came up, i also erased old fault codes. Will pick up a coil soon and see if that helps. Also will look into a secondhand knock sensor to see if that helps.

When you get the coil off, take the brackets off and have a good look for cracks.

Yeah thats what kills them, small cracks around mount holes allowing water in (thats what killed my original coil). If only they were mounted horizontal to take the weight off the coil where the mounts attach
