A blown head gasket sounds possible.

Get the cooling system pressure tested, if it won't hold pressure and you do not have a water leak, bye bye headgasket.

A way to check is when the car cools down take out the sparkplugs and while they are all out get someone to crank the car. You will see coolant piss out of the sparkplug holes if thats the case. Usually it happens in the N.o 1 or 5 cylinders. Hopefully for your sake no coolant sprays out. Also you will see the sparkplugs turning brown whilst they are out like a rusty colour.

A shop depending if the head needs to be machined or repaired not far from $800 ish id say.

You do your self maybe half that.

You need headbolts, coolant, Headgasket kit. Maybe the head has corrosion on it and it needs machining and whilst its of id check the valves and replace any that look stuffed. Also if you have noisy lifters you may as well do them at the same time.

Yep it gets expensive.

Why? It does't matter what make or model you buy, they all have there individual problems. For less than a grand you are going to have a car that should be good for another 150000 ks. If the rest of the car is worth it, go for it.
