depends what you are trying to do. Tie rod ends and rack ends to a degree, but internally, No.

Yes.
There is a big nut on the back of the rack which pushes the rack into the pinion teeth. Normally this should be set when the rack is new, but can be reset as obviously parts will wear. Doing this is a good way to eliminate any slack / clicking the rack has because the rack and pinion are too far apart. Doesn't solve the fact that a rack may just be worn and s**t, but can help a little. There is also an adjustment for centering the rack in its travel. |

The play could be many things, not just the rack.
Rack ends, intermediate shaft, tie rod ends, bushes, the column itself, etc, etc. I have tightened that nut up a little on peoples cars in the past to remove play and get them over the line for a RW, but the remainder of their front ends were generally new and tight. Being an EL, I'd put money on the intermediate shaft being worn, and being the biggest reason for the play. But have a try at tightening the rack nut, it might do what you need. |
