Does anyone know where the fan relays are located on an El?. I am looking at running thermos in my Ed and wanted to get the right ones. I assume they are the relay block on the battery side but not sure as there is also a relay block on the airbox side aswell.

Any info would be great.

EF fans have three speed stages and EL fans have two speed stages...

So to correctly get the thermos to run in dual stage you will need a dual contact temp switch so it brings on the slow stage first and then the high speed when it get a bit hotter...

these are available you can search the tidon website:

http://www.tridon.com.au/Products/Produ ... 483&P=2014

One such example would be the TFS 209... It all just depends on your thermostat and where you want these to come on and go off... The second set of temps is where the switches close (so first switch is 102 and second is 107) and the first set is where they turn off (95 the first turns off and 100 the second turns off)

See this attachment for reply behavior and fan operation:

If you get EL relays there will be three... However you will need to use the 4th relay spot and wire in another relay so the fans come on low speed (or high, your choice) when the AC compressor comes in, otherwise you might find your AC in the car wont be very cold as the condenser wont be able to exchange heat, esp when not moving... (computer controls this in EL)

I recommend EL fans and relays as I have done some research and they are simpler to wire... I have all the gear to do mine bar the fans and temp switch

When you unpick the loom you will find many big wires and 3 sets of small trigger wires... now if i remember correctly there is a set of blue wires 3 of all joined together (might be the red too... but its whichever have all 3 joined together)... Now you hook these to switched ignition power (otherwise you fans will run when your car is off)... and then the red or blue (which ever remains) will be in two groups... A group with one wire and a group will two wires... If you earth out the single wire you will bring on low speed... If you earth out the dual wires and the single wire (all 3) you will bring on high speed... And last but not least the big yellow wire needs to be fuse straight off the battery A 30amp inline blade or something off the sort should satisfy enough...

Hope all this helps a little...

Cheers,
Tim

Oh the one other thing i forgot to mention is that your thermostat housing, being an ED will have two senders in it and one spare bung... There thread in there to my knowledge is 3/8gas however tridon don't do a dual contact switch in 3/8 gas so you will have to find what works (I imagine the M14 would be a similar size so you will need to take the lower thermostat housing off and re tap the thread to suit whichever sender you choose...

Cheers,
Tim

Thank you for the info Tim. I went to the wrecker today and pulled all the wiring out complete back to the ecu. Have an el ecu arriving tomorrow I'll start sorting through the loom at some point I plan on running thermos, bbm and all off the el ecu. So have all I need just need to spend some time unpicking the looms. Not sure when I'm going to do the thermos might have some more questions when the time comes.

Got the relays and have unpicked the wiring back to the battery side of the car. All I have to do now is figure out what wires are needed and where they need to go too. Got no idea at the moment will have to do some more reading.

a little off topic, but does anyone know where the best (cheapest) place to get new ef thermo relays from? I've tried the usual supercheap and so on, but the diagram is slightly different from memory? will it matter?

ford want $90 for the set

FORDom,

I have two thermo fan relays boxes... one has green and white relays the other has blue and grey relays... From what i can gather the white and green appear to have a resistor in parallel with the coil (from the diagram on the side)... must change how quickly they close or something... However bother these relays boxes are out of EL falcons and only have the three relays... Your EF will need 4...

I'm betting that the best place would be going to a wrecker... or getting onto someone on here wrecking a car and seeing what they say...

Cheers,
Tim
