This same situation has just occured with my 4.0 EF, i did an engine swap with an EF XR6 4.0 and now the fans come on when ever the engine is running. The car has been to an electrician and had the basics checked and all was ok, i've had to resort to removing the fan fuse as my battery keeps going flat.
I'll be taking the car to another sparky during the week.

what are the relays? what code or serial number or what ever..? can they be bought from repco??
all 3 relays look ok. wiring appears to be intact. relay box has 1 missing relay........ie 4 spaces, 3 relays. are they in the right place?? where should they all be?? mine are, from left to right: first space empty; slots 2, 3, and 4 have the relays... 2x white r6k4 40 amp, and 1x green r6k7 40/20amp. green 40/20a in the middle, ie slot 3.. just to recap; whenever engine is running, fans are running. car used to be auto, is now manual. BUT: manual conversion was home job (previous owner) and all the old auto hoses, wiring is still under the car(!)... am now thinking this might be the place to start.... |

You could have mentioned that in the first place, cos that is the answer. I was right when I said it was the fact the ECU cant see the transmission temp sensor. If it can't see a response from the sensor it automatically turns the fans on full to keep the trans cool. Do a search for manual conversions in EF/EL on here for what resistors need to be bought and what wires they need to be applied to to trick the ECU into thinking the trans temp sensor is still there. Then it will be fine and back to normal. |

just an update for interested parties...
got lucky and picked up el2 tickford manual ecu, installed with the chip from my auto ecu. fans running normally, tho temp get a bit high before they kick in (rbetweenO and R). will see how it goes on highway to work tomorrow. lpg runs great, petrol a lot better, but still a bit gutless off the mark, but it doesn't feel like it'll stall under load/low revs anymore. bit smoother, sounds a bit meatier.. all good. next stop, new dyno tune.. |

better off having them run all the time, less chance of doing a head gasket, besides in normal temp has to rise to 106*c befor they turn on and 110A alternator has pleanty to spare

still got that hesitation/lurching at trying to maintain steady 100kph... next stop fuel pump and bigger injectors, then dyno....
