hiya... my thermo fans on 98 el are always on from ignition start. service mecahnic says they are "hard-wired" in; but i can unplug them from the harness to turn them off... could the relays be buggered? what about the thermal switch or whatever controls the fans..? could this be the "hardwired" part? just want them to run normal...i'm guessing that they're not supposed to be running all the time...
cheers for any help. |

To be honest I don't think they are supposed to be on all the time? Otherwise Ford would not have put a Fan Sensor on the car. In your Thermostat housing there should be a rather large looking sender sticking out the side of it with one wire, it may be the cause of the fans not shutting off.
The sensor is available from your friendly Ford dealer for $67.00 part number 6810428. When you have engine running, just pull the wire off the sensor and see if that stops it. |

the temp sender is only new; when i bought the car 2 months ago there wasn't one at all(beleive it or not), and i dont wanna break it...the snorkel is in the way and i dont wanna pull everything out just now.. no time today. i can tell you that the fans have been like this since i bought the car, broken sender and all so i'm guessing it's not that. as far as i know, from what i've been told, the sender wiring is fine and intact...the temp guage now reads normal(between A and L).

Maybe the relay has welded shut?

The Temp sender and sensor are different. The Sensor is a BIG unit and the temp Sender is a small flat blade terminal. The ONLY other thing I can think of is, the last person who owned it didn't want to go to the expense of getting a NEW sensor, by-passed the relay and made it constant? |

check your coolant temp sensor is plugged in at the thermostat housing. 2wire plug....Generally if that is unplugged all the sensor fails the ECU locks the fans on all the time(fail safe mode).

temp sensor is new. where is sender? relays possibly buggered, but all seem ok... as i said, mechanic say fans hardwired in, so the bypass seems the likely scenario..
how do i trace the wiring and put it back thru the relays?? electrical means dramas to me, and wiring diagrams look like foreign language!!! if anyone can point me in the right direction i'll give it a whirl.. cheers for input, guys... |

Do they stay on all the time when ignition is turned on ?
If they come on when starting the car & then turn off when the engine has started that is normal. The relays get activated by the ecu & sends a earth output to the relays. For memory they are 2 wires & it's blue with white trace. If anyone has hard wired the circuit they would have to earth those wires. So to find out you have to unbolt the fan relay block which is inbetween the passengers side headlight & air intake box. Look underneith the block to see the wiring. Check if those wires have been earthed out to the body. If so you need to reconnect them again to the harness. If you do they have to be connected to to correct circuits but the problem is they are the same colours. You have to trace the wires to the correct ecu pins. I hope this helps you & good luck.

nah they are on when the car is on. if the engine is running the fans are going. so i just re-connect the blue with white to the blue with white?? if i can find the original blue with whites?? easy!!!
crap; no wonder auto-sparkies charge so much, and are always whingeing.... ok, so if it was a quick fix for a broken temp sensor or similar then chances are fair that the wires were cut and earthed close to the easiest access point from the relay box...which is the relay box... sounds logical, right??? ermm, yes, logical; Last edited by 984.OEL on Sun Aug 23, 2009 12:06 am, edited 1 time in total. |

The relays are infront of the airbox. Should be 4 relays??

I'll jump in and ask a few Q's,
1. Are the fans on when ever the key is on? Even with the engine off? 2. Can you get photo's of the Thermo fan wiring at the plug?

There is only 1 temp sensor on an EL. There are 3 potential answers: 1. One of the relays are rooted and stuck closed 2. ECU is faulty and keeping the fans on, even though the dash gauge indicates OK. 3. Transmission temp sensor is rooted or wiring is dirty and the ECU can't see it. It might pay to see if you can get a code tester and pull the codes, as it will log a fault for any of the above. |

First of all el's has 3 relays not 4.
I am a auto sparkie & that's why we charge because you can't see electricity. Coolant temp sensor possible but i don't think so. Ecu possible but i don't think so not on a el falcon. Relays stuck a very good chance. Wiring modified very good chance. Transmmision sensor possible but i don't think so. This is what i think. Very hard to say because i'm going off what your telling me. If you have no clue what your doing please see a sparkie because you might do more damage than what it's worth.
