Hi
I am having issues with my el 6 cyl fairmount on gas, and would appreciate some advise I have the timing set at about 20 degrees before tdc to make it run half decent If I set the timing at anything less it backfires on gas, if I set it on the timing mark it runs real bad in petrol I have checked the timing mark on the pulley is right by making a special tool to stop the piston just before tdc, marking the pulley, then the crank back 1 turn and stopping the piston just after tdc There is no sign of slack in the distributor drive or timing chain, the cam timing is right, I have changed recently leads cap rotor coil oxy dissy Any suggestions please |

are you putting the ecu in diagnostic mode before adjusting the timing???

YES, does changing from petrol to gas change the timing signal in the ecu?

Is it possible the harmonic balancer has slipped?
Edit: read first post about special tool and whatnot

Probably not a timing issue but a mixture problem.
Have you had the gas mixtures checked. What's the converter look like? |

No
The information I have said to, turn ignition off bridge connector restart motor idle speed will increase to indicate it is in test mode, no mention of waiting 2 minutes, if I wait 2 minutes do I get any indication it is in test mode Am I doing it wrong? |

Thats because most think setting timing on el is same as ea-ed. But its not..
Your doing it right but once idle increases wait approx 2 mins and you will hear the rpm drop and the engine will sound retarded as the base timing on el is 0 deg or tdc.. As your running lpg I would run it at 5deg btdc.. this will be approx 25deg btdc out of diag mode.. I have a vid I put on you tube showing it going into timing mode but im on my mobile and dont have the link.. Ill post the link later if you like.. |

Thank you for the information, it is 100% correct, turns out I did not have an issue after all
The information I was using was from an ef el manual, go figure I just had the gas system serviced by a so called expert and he did not know Once again thanks for the help |
