Hi guys. My brother has a EL Wagon with a few faults and one of them is the boot actuator. It is no longer locking / unlocking when he presses the release key on the remote key fob. What sort of work and part cost is required to fix this?

This may sound silly.
But the first thing I'd do is check the wiring. Plugs do come unplugged sometimes.

I don't know when Ford started with it but my EL does.
My EA wagon had a Actuator but was only operated from a switch on the Dash

They don't have a separate button on the fob like the sedans. But they do unlock when you push the button, on the fob, to unlock the rest of the car.

So it is just connected to the central locking then? If that is right then you can eliminate the possiblities if the other doors still lock/unlock... I would check the plugs...

Is it a fiddly job to get to the actuator and / or plug?

you gotta take the inner trim off the gate. it's easy enough. row of screws along the bottom of the trim and one in each top corner. then 3 clips that pull out along the top. if you're doing the actuator you'll need to take the numberplate surround off too. take the plate off, there's a bolt behind it, then there's 4 more bolts the same that live behind the tailgate inner trim

Just unscrew the grey plastic cover from the inside of the tail gate.

Ive got the same issue on my Waggin. i've tried several actuators with no luck.
Some of the blow fuses, some just make the entire system cycle.. others dont work at all. I've given up and manually unlock it with a key when I need to get in the back
