Update:
Mechanic got the head off today and will be sending it away for testing so wont know the final result for a few more days. Spoke to him about gaskets and I think he prefers to use the Ford Recommended Gasket as it is a product he can stand by. Cheers |

Sounds like there are pros and cons to either gasket.
The Mechanic basically told me that if a gasket is going to fail it's going to fail regardless of what it is made of, and I would rather the Gasket fail then the Head itself. At this stage I am still hopeing that it is only the gasket and nothing werse. Might have to learn to do this repair myself for the future. |

I highly recommend the genuine AU MLS gasket as well. I agree that the head and block need to be in top notch condition, ie resurfaced or decked to make sure they are straight and clean, however when I did the head gasket on my engine, I just cleaned the block up, didn't even check if it was straight. The head was cleaned, resurfaced and checked and my engine still runs after 5 years. I was probably damn lucky, but it worked out fine.

I won't use a Graphite type head gasket.....they don't bond very well in my opinion....they feel slippery to touch....and I just don't like them.
I use the Composite type gaskets from either Payen, ACL, or Felpro. I won't run coolant/inhibitor straight away either with a new head gasket.....gives the gasket a chance to bond. This car had a head gasket done 2 years before I got it....and the gasket had failed due to incorrect mix of coolant....too weak. I did that job over 4 years ago now.....no leaks....and I have changed the coolant twice in that time.

I always use Hylomar PL32 sealing compound . Rolls Royce Aero spec in a 400 ml aerosol . Spray both sides of the head gasket liberally and allow the solvent to evaporate away then head bolts , walk away for an hour and then retorque . Have never had a gasket come back leaking , ever .
http://www.hylomar.com/index.php?option ... Itemid=125 http://www.hylomar.com/index.php?option ... &Itemid=82 Oh BTW we all know how prone E series are to head gasket failure don't we ? Mines coming up on 373,000 kilometres on the original head gasket and it has been overheated twice in its life . |

Still hadn't heard from them on saturday so I guess I will have to chase them up on Monday. I think he was talking about useing the composite gasket. Thanks for asking and I will keep the updates going. Cheers |

Next Update:
-Public Holiday went past and hadn't heard from mechanic.!!! At this stage I still don't know if the Head is OK.!! Chased someone up today to be told that the car was almost ready (had a feeling that would happen) and that I would be called later today. The call came through and he said he wanted to drive the car for a bit tonight to clear the water out of the exhaust and he will call me tomorrow morning to let me know how it went. So at this stage the car is still in the hands of the mechanics. Tomorrow will tell. |

sounds to me like he either has no idea what he is doing, or he is just wasting time. A blown headgasket should not be taking this long to be diagnosed.

Update:
Got the car back today. Yay!!!!! She is running beautifully. It turns out that during all this the mechanic I was originally dealing with got sacked (No Surprise) and the owner of the shop finished the job. Even though it cost me a bit more then I was expecting they were still the cheapest. In the end they went with the composite gasket. VRS Gasket Set Mono-Torque Premium Hopefully, with good maintenance and servicing this is the last time this happens. Cheers |
