My EL 6cyl is at the mechanics with a suspected blown head gasket.
This is the second one in 5 years. Can someone please tell me if there is a recommended Head Gasket to use???. I heard maybe AU is better??? Cheers |

Yes, AU MLS head gasket as per ebay item below...decently priced IMO
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GENUINE-FORD ... 43ae278eda Also need new head bolts while you're at it. These are fine, although you can always buy genuine, but not sure how much they are and none seem to be on ebay. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FORD-FALCON- ... 1e6f89b889 Mechanic doing the job or doing it yourself?

also when you get it back keep the cooling system clean, and only use good coolant. they dont like just water or cheap s**t coolant. i did 2 head gaskets in 2 years, but since i've flushed/cleaned the system and only used nulon i havent had an issue in 2.5 years.

It doesn't matter what you run, it matters how you run it. Don't let it warm up properly before you thrash it can do it harm. I am still running on the same AU head gasket I changed 5 years ago, I ran distilled water for 3 years after I dumped coolant on the race track without issue as a daily driver.

I was running that cheap super crap coolant thats like water. I never thrash it while its cold. But i was also using the ef head gasket, not a mls.

Thanks for the responses.
This also helped me with what was going to be my next question. What to do to lesson the possibility of this happening again.!! When I get the car back I will check that the Thermo Fan Relays are working at all speeds. And possibly look into a Coolant Temperature Gauge. Any other sugestions would be appreciated. |

You should have a gauge already on your dash. Or doesnt that work? Or did you mean one that tells you the actual temp?

I've only ever had to do head gaskets once......when done right, and servied regularly, and haven't been cooked by a holed radiator, or a split hose, or too lower coolant level,.. they aren't a problem.
When doing one, cleanliness is the key, and procedure after that.

just be advised that while the mls is a good gasket it is not the be all and end all, they are not as forgiving as the graphite ones and the head and block must be dead straight and spotless for the mls to work properly.

cjh has a good pic of how the block is supposed to look.
