Hi Guys,
Just a quick one.... I have an issue where my car is using excessive fuel, 20L/100kms down the freeway where it used to do between 6 and 8. Black smoke pisses out the back when you flatten it however the most concerning part is that when you hold it at a constant rpm it miss fires. Any idea what might cause this? I am thinking MAP sensor would this be a good spot to start looking?

Your ECU would be the best place to start looking. Try doing a diagnostic to see what it says. I would of thought plugs and leads would be the best place to start looking.
Dads EL was missing at idle, and it turned out to be plug leads.

The old EL cab we had did this after constant backfiring on LPG. The Backfiring was so severe that if you rolled on the throttle the intake pipe would get blown right off and the car would stall. When running on petrol it would just miss and blow black smoke whenever any throttle was applied. I don't remember what the problem was exactly but it was something along the lines of ignition and vaccum leak. It cost us around $80 bucks to get it fixed.

hi there,
Plugs and leads are a good place to start. Use Ford or NGK spark plugs. For the leads, use Ford genuine (not much more $$$ than aftermarket). Aside from that, check all your vacuum hoses and that your PCV is working properly. Good luck, let us know how you go |

Thanks for the info so far, Plugs and leads are all in good condition, plugs are 7,000kms old and have been checked. The problem has only been happening since Sunday, after putting in some new speakers, disconnectinhg the battery and changing the fuel pump. Which I tonight put the old one back in which but still has the problem.
Just another quick one, how do you run ECU diagnostics?

would be good idea to check oxy sensor on exhaust, if not working correctky will not tell ecu correct fuel mixture, can check using multi meter.
Voltage should swing around 0.5 volts, if stays constant it will need replacing. there is 3 wires coming off it, so might take some stuffing around to figure out which wire it is.

I would say you got some s**t fuel there buddy.
Buy a new fuel filter, run the tank as low as possible and fill up at another servo and maybe some wynn's injector/ fuel treatment wouldn't hurt. I fueled up at a servo and my trip meter went to 22l. drove like a army tank. Drained the tank, put some new fuel in it from another servo, went like a b**ch again. Never going back to that servo. Also check your map sensor hose hasn't come loose?????????Does happen! |

Also, when your leads and plugs where replaced, do you know if the rotor button inside the dizzy was replaced too? Ing. timing can also make this problem happen, ... |

Hey Ant
Been lurking around here for quite some time Just never posted anything before under this nick Oxygen sensor is ok, rotor button is ok (evertyhing sparks nicel), MAP sensor seems to be working, have discconnecting and reconnecterd the vacuum line and same thing happens Havent checked timing yet however my car is going in to Ford today to get put on the diagnostics machine to find the fault. It is just dumping way too much fuel, costing me $30 a day atm to drive the 80km return trip to work, but hopefully it will be all sorted today by Ford.

Maybe check the fuel return line into the tank. I've you managed to kink it a little it will be holding more pressure behind the injectors and forcing more fuel through them....
Its a long shot, but if since you were changing the fuel pump... |

Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone.
It did end up being the MAP sensor, I swapped it with the one out of my EA and everything works perfectly
