hey i was talking to this guy he got 150 rwkw by using a electric water pump along with other standard mods such as extractors. i was just wondering have many of use guys used an electric water pump and had gains how much ruffly are they and are they hard to fit? he told me it was a very worth while modification

been waiting to see posts on this matter pop up, can't wait to se non-advertisers results. although i do rate davies craig highly... much higher than jim mockery anyway.

Yeah same, I heard though that the first lot of there pumps had problems when people didn't remove the thermostat and the pump would force the water past the internal seal in the pump and stuff it, but this has been fixed in the second version I was considering one too because you can run them after the car has stopped (with an electric fan) too stop heat soak! But do you really trust an electric pump?

yer it's meant to make the thermostat redundant anway isn't it ? and i don't think i'd run one without the smart controller.
think of the faith you place in your thermos in traffic ? i'd just like something visual to let you know when it's working. version 2's are meant to be alot better than the first ones.

After reading all this stuff done to an EB ( 150 rwkw ), I've done well I thought sqeezing 186RWHP from a buggered 3.9 EA......LOL...
Standard cam, ported & polished head, Pacie comps, homemade exhaust, Pod airfilter, and a Piggy back ECU.

ea_falcon: Why does it give that much power? (is this a rhetorical question)
I'd gather it would be the same as putting on an external oil pump (reliability too), engine now has more energy into driving the wheels rather than spending energy on pushing water through the system. |

Was the electric water pump and thermo's done at the same time? that would take a fair amount of load off the engine

I wouldn't run one on a streetcar, personally.
In my eyes the big pro for running an EWP is more consistent temperature regulation, especially in this case, being a drift car, because revs are never constant, and the cooling system is already highly stressed (less airflow over the front). Theres no such thing as free power, granted it is alot more efficient then a mechanical water pump because it probably runs across a narrower operating band, rpm wise, and it's designed for efficiency in that band, but there is now another electrical load on the alternator. I dunno, I can't see it being a 'real' 10kw worth.

In the normal scenario power is taken directly from the serpentine/harmonic balancer, which may have about a 3% belt and bearing loss, and converted into rotary shaft motion, which might incur about a 5% loss in the shaft bearings, and to an impeller, which in the earlier cars may have a significant loss, less so in the EF and later plastic impellers. When there is no flow the plastic impellers would have very small loss.
In the electric pump scenario the power is going from the serpentine/harmonic balancer (say 3%), to the alternator (say 10%), to the wiring (say 5%), to the electric pump motor (say 10%), to the pump impeller. So far i see negatives for the electric pump. The only way i can see it redeeming itself is with respect to there being no thermostat and the pump controlling temp solely through pump flow. How much this counteracts the aforementioned losses i don't want to guesstimate.

i can see the parasitic loss of the water pump, but the alternator? only runs what it can run, i can't see more current draw reflecting on power loss.
my twin thermos draw over 60amps on startup and my stereo used to draw near 80 on flat stick,add high beams etc...., and noticed no power loss, sure the lights dip when the fans come on and my stereo draws so much power the display dims with power output but thats the alternators fault, i'm not blaming the gutless motor, if i put a bigger alternator on it will be creating more parasitic loss though. question i have is, if you throw in a ewp, are you still using the impellor as an idler ? or using custom belts ? cause the latter would be the only way to increase power. i'm no auto electrician so if someone would explain this would be appreciated by more than i.
