Hi guys just picked up a au2 falcon in reasonably good nick. One problem tho the engine seems to shake intermitently now and then esp when first started. Not sure if its a misfire or not. And under heavy acceleration it almost feels like the engine is moving to the side indipendent of the body.for a second or so. Also.cruising along the highway at constant acceleration it intermitently feels like the car is losing power then gaining power all within a split second so it feels like the car is surging forward and lagging back. Does this sound like a missfire or possibly an engine mount?
I am able to move the engine side to side with my hand without a hell of alot of effort ( it moves maybe 2-3 mm if that) is that normal? ( i tried it in my missus v6 and couldnt move the engine, the whole car rocked with it lol) |

If you can move the engine by hand without effort, engine mounts are gone.
Surging power, could be failing coil, lead, spark or fuel delivery is being hindered by filter, pump or injectors.

phongus is correct. Engine moving is most likely engine mounts, and as for the power surging, my Nannas car did the same thing and it was a clogged fuel filter. Recommend a major service, change all your filters, leads, plugs etc. Does your AU sometimes rev slightly at idle? this sometimes happens if their is a problem with fuel delivery.

Ok thanks mate. It requires a little effort but i able to woble the engine side to side by hand, movement is only a few mm.

And how many mounts are there? Is it just the two? Also to change them is it just a matter of supporting the engine from underneath, undoing the mounts and putting the new ones in?

Not sure how many mounts are on the AU. But yes... it usually is just a matter of supporting the engine from underneath. Then you should be able to just unbolt the old ones and in with the new. But sometimes things can get in the way, I've never been under an AU so i don't know what its like. Best way would be to get underneath yourself, locate the mounts and see how hard it is to get to them.

Hmm now im experience alot of loss of power. Feels like there is a huge flatspot across the range. I floor it and i get nothing. Ill start with the fuel filter today and see if that fixes it. Could it be the fuel pump? How can i test if the pump is working properly?

I just took the inline fuel filter off, it seems ok, i am able to blow thru it easily enough. Could the problem be a blocked cat?

Hey mate to check if your engine mounts are gone, with the engine running put ya foot on the brakes and shift between drive-neutral-reverse, if your oengine is rocking around when the gear engages your mounts are screwed. You should be able to see cracks in the mount rubbers. If you have a collapsed cat, u should hear rattling if you shake your exhaust. Also it wouldn't want to rev depending on how block It was. Try fuel and air filters.

Try fuel and air filters. You won't see cracks in the engine mounts as they are oil filled in the AU's. Does the car vibrate at idle. If the mounts have collapsed you will feel the vibration at idle through the car and steering wheel. Goes away when you accelerate. Look at the drivers side mount and see if the srround on the top section of the mount is touching the bottom plate. |

Loss of power sucks... and if your fuel filter is fine that also sucks because that means that its something more serious. Burnt valves or dirty fuel injectors could be playing a part in the power loss... you should do a fuel pressure test. This will tell you what the fuel pump is like as long as their isn't a clog in the fuel line somewhere.

Replaced the fuel filter and it seems to have fixed the problem, at least its not as bad. There still seems to be a slight miss, mostly only when the car is in gear and barely moving. Engine is sill a little hessitant, but now only noticable when i floor it, at normal cruising can't really notice it. I might replace the coil pack and leads when i get a chance. Not looking forward to it coz its a big job, worst design ever thanks ford
