My mates 1998 falcon ute is missing, starving of fuel or air when hot. Its a I6 auto. Now it only happens when hot and when you give it some stick. It feels like its missing on a few cylinders and the whole car just shakes, it occasionally backfires. The coil was replaced 2 months ago, the air filter plugs and leads were replaced sunday. I did notice that the rotor button is slighty burnt away on the end im not sure but i think this may have something do do with it but the temperature thing may discount that. The distributer cap has been cleaned and no cracks visible. when cold it idles fine and doesnt have this problem.
Any help would be great thanks. |

I might have thought coil because they sometimes fail when warm, but you have replaced it. Was the coil new or s/h?

The coil was new, im thinking head gasket also as is sounds like 2 cylinders missing and only when hot. He bought the car 2 years ago and wasnt sure if the head had been done prior. I told him to have a compression test done and see what happens from there.

Any help would be great thanks.

i'd bet on fuel system. just did the filter in mine, full of s**t. and thats after 70,000ks. after i pulled the plugs, they were white on the electrode. means its running lean. problem is the ecu expects the fuel pressure to always be at 4 bar. as soon as that filter clogs, the computer doesn't know it and doesn't get the required fuel. i knew i had a problem because it took a little long for the revs to drop back after revving it.
i assume its a progressive problem as it gets hotter? if it was sticky valves, timing carbon, or knock sensors you'd expect it to play up as soon as you'd kicked it over. just check the air and fuel filters first

I thinks its more than just a fuel filter or timing out. He took it to a mechanic and has had a loan car for two days now. I havnt spoken to him yet but by the looks its the head.

Forgot to add earlier that the fuel filter had been changed 6 months ago but all it takes is some bad fuel with water in it. But that wouldnt explain why its worse when hot, also the fuel pump seems ok as i clamped the return line on the injector rail to boost the pressure and it made no difference. I will let you guys know what it was when he gets it back from the mechanics.

I'm having an interestingly similar problem with my EF. I've not long had the head done, with a full gasket kit. Previously, due to stuffed head and cracked / leaking intake gasket she was missin like a b**ch. That cleared up after we did the head but a week or 2 later she started playin up again.
Now, when its cold there's no issue. But sometimes, once she's warmed up she'll run rough / miss a bit at idle, especially pulled up at the lights still in gear (auto trans). I was thinkin of replacing plugs/leads for some good quality stuff, NGK plugs, 8-10mm leads, see if that fixes her up. Same bloke who did my head reckons plugs leads MAY be the issue, but isnt sure. He hasnt looked at it yet, was just talkin bout it.

Starts doing it after about 10 min of driving, basically at running temp. He still hasnt got it back so if its taken 4 days its gotta be bad... bad as in head!!!
