First questions is what's wrong with it? Is it blowing blue smoke? Lost Compression?

I agree, if engine is in bad shape, then probably more economical in the long run to buy a later model. If engine is worn out, lots of other parts are probably on thier way out too.
If not blowing smoke thick smoke or too rattly, you can keep cars going a long time by going up a grade in oil or using some additives. (If there is some smoke it could just be valve stem seals which isn't a big job.) I did a DIY rebuild on my EF, which cost around $1,500 inc buying an engine crane and stand and ring compressors, etc. It was a lot of stuffing around though running parts back and forward to the engine shop for machine work and going to parts stores for tools and parts.

agree with the above,
you would only think about recoing if you were to turbo it or something, to take all the conpression back to level. a new car would be the best go, even though its hard to let go of a car you like to find another its ussualy the best way to go. |

if you like the car, keep it.
if ya wanna keep it long term, get the engine reco'd, otherwise just find a low K engine and swap it over. |

Well I assume this isn't the case for the OP. Either way...let us know what the symptoms are. It is sometimes cheaper to just get a second engine, but if you don't have the tool requirements you will set yourself back a fair few dollars, but sometimes it is also cheaper to invest in tools then sending it to a numb nut mechanic.

Yep i will second that numb nut mechanics WILL f**k you in the bum I paid $1500 to get my old engine out and the second hand one in and running afterwards i realised he ripped me off because my father is getting charged $700 to get the same done to my mums car (ford explorer 4X4) |

Aww as far as i know theres nothing wrong with it minus the power steering belt slipping, its got 234xxx K's and im assuming the guy before me flogged the a*** out of it, i got it off him for 1500 and love it to bits, imo it goes hard looks great without being attention grabbing and is the closest thing i can get to a V8 on my p's its got pacies and a K&N so i dont know if they do anything to the life of the engine, i was just thinking about a reco cause i love it and want it to go harder then it does but recos are only really done to extend the life on it i might just drive it till it dies then upgrade to an EL

Well if theres nothing wrong with it i dont really know why you would wanna reco, atleast do a comp test first, is it using oil? and as said probly just better off replacing it with an a later model engine (not necessarily the whole car) If you wanna go quicker then cam + chip? probly gonna be your best bang for buck.

As long as you can keep the body in good shape (minimal dents, minimal - no rust etc) you can always replace the engine and keep it running...assuming other drive line parts are in good shape. If you want to keep it for longer, you can always buy a second hand EF/EL/AU engine and slowly work on it to spread out the cost. Then just swap the engine over once the other one dies...and hopefully you'll be off you P's by then. Can work out cheaper then buying another car some times.

Well i got a regrind from wade for $150, with a part exchange from my old cam, as for a chip i dont really know, (kind of depends whether u want to tune it urself or have them do it) its on the T.I performance site, so just google that and its all there, there are a few packages/options available, for an EB you need to get an EL ECU (or atleast thats their strong recommendation). All these prices kind of vary a bit just depending on what you want really, and how far u want to go tuning wise, what do you want from the car? quicker 1/4 mile? do you want one that just gives u more punch on the street? so youll have to decide on the appropriate cam to suit what you want, need to research it a bit.
