im taking the engine outta the car. with the air con lines and hoses is it a matter of undoing them and letting the gas out of the lines

Undo the compressor and move it to the side leaving the air con lines attached.
If you must drain it push the button on the air con bottle at the front of the car. Cover it with a rag or something to stop it blowing all over you, apparently its nasty stuff so dont inhale it. Let all the gas out and then undo the lines. I have heard that it is illegal to do this at home so dont do it out on the street. |

Releasing car air-conditioner gas is illegal. A "recovery unit" is supposed to be used to "recover" the gas into a gas bottle which you can take to gas places to be emptied. However, the small amount that is inside a car's air-conditioner will really not affect you or the environment. Unless you put your mouth over the tube and breathe deeply

i normally remove the battery, and leave the p/s pump in the battery tray with the lines attached. and the a/c compressor is fine to just undo the bolts and leave it in the car. it just sits on the k frame out of the way.

The air con gas is nasty stuff. I accidentally breathed some in, as I wasn't expecting it to come out, and I was coughing all day.
Definitely not good, and next time I think I'll leave it to the experts. |

Definitely not good, and next time I think I'll leave it to the experts. Hmm... you must build up an immunity to it after working with it for so long... I've breathed it in pleanty of times. Same with Dad. Goes with working in the industry I suppose.

Air con gas is a drying agent, that's why when you breathe it in you throat feels dry and start to cough...drink water to wet the throat again. Not sure of any long term problems though.
