Just a quick question, what was the last 6 cylinder falcon to use a dizzy before coilpacks? And what the hell is with the BA's sparkplugs having some tacky looking wire hang off it instead of a lead?

Pretty sure it was the EF only that used coil packs and the EL's onwards up to the BA used distributers. The BA onwards have the coil on the spark plug.

AU had a coilpack, was better than the EF though. |

EA thru to ED had distributors,EF had coil pack, then EL had distributor, then AU to AU3 went to coil pack and then BA have individual coilpacks and spark plugs on the BA dont get changed for a long time.

The EF used Bosch coil pack, the AU's used Visteon coil packs.
The EL was the last to use a dizzy. The first model XH ute with the XR6 engine had a coil pack, then they went to dizzy later on still with the XR6 engine. Can't remember the dates. The std XH utes had log manifold and a dizzy. This was till the AU utes came out in 99.

Will the AU coil pack run ok on the EF, or do you risk blowing the mosfets if it draws too much current?

My understanding is that all I6 XH's run a TFI (aka EL) ignition system, and that early XR6's ran the EF induction piping. The XHI ford shop manual makes no mention about the EDIS ignition system either in the EEC section, or the wiring diagrams.

The XHI ford shop manual makes no mention about the EDIS ignition system either in the EEC section, or the wiring diagrams. I remember this because I worked on them when they were brand new. Yes the XR versions had the BBM. But the first of the XH XR6 had EF ignition setup. I saw a dark green one, it was only a couple of months old and I saw it had a coil pack, but the ones I saw later had dizzys. I can't explain it. You see some strange things sometimes. Like an AU XR6 that was using oil from new till 10,000kms when Ford said, pull the engine out and dismantle it to rering it. #6 piston had no rings on it at all. I saw that for myself. Another was a nonstop oil leak at the rear of the engine in an Explorer, UN or UP model OHC 4.0 V6. Eventually the problem was found and it was a casting flaw in the back of the engine block, so a new one had to come from Germany, thats where the blocks were cast. End of rant.

Probably may have been a few that were fitted with EF engine wiring looms on the assembly line - given all XH's run an EF BEM, that could be understandable. But the first of the XH XR6 had EF ignition setup. BA's are coil over plug. So there are no leads at all
