Are there any precautions for starting an engine that has been sitting for nearly 12 months?

just check oil (maybe replace if you feel like it) and give her a crank. Thats what I did with my new au motor which was sitting still for a good 6 months

mate when you start it up just let it idle for a while than give it a few short revs and give it a drive nice and slow and than take it to 110ks and 120ks for about 5ks and than back to 100ks than take it home and give it a oil change

I started the engine yesterday it ran for about 10 to 15 seconds just long enough to realise the exhaust wasnt tightened to the catalytic converter, I tightened the exhaust then tried starting again and it would only crank but not turn over. So I fitted new leads, plugs and rotor button but it still won't idle, I am about to replace the coil with a spare one just to eliminate that as being the cause. Any ideas what else could cause it to not want to idle.

Idle speed controller could be gummed up - give it a clean maybe?
