My EF XR6 wagon stumbles when accelerating quickly from idle or low RPM - even at only half throttle. Makes merging with traffic a dicey proposition. It occasionally backfires at the same time. And it's worse when the engine's cold. The diagnostics come up clean. Sounds like a fuel problem to me, but where do I start? Anyone else had a similar problem?
It's a '95 EF1 XR6 wagon, auto, Coby headers, no cat (legal in NZ), 2.5" mandrel-bent exhaust, XR8 snorkel, Amsoil foam panel filter, Champion triple-steel 8mm wires, Autolite 985 plugs, otherwise stock.

Consider you oxy sensor as well... a rooted one can have this symptom. How many kms has your car done?

Plugs and wires are near new. Colour on plugs is good. I have given the ISC solenoid a good clean, but maybe it's stuffed. I have had a slightly rough idle since I bought the car 2 years ago - possibly vacuum leak - but the stumbling only started a few months ago, and is getting worse. At 222,000kms, a faulty oxygen sensor wouldn't be out of the question. Could the fuel pressure regulator be involved?
Thanks a bunch for your help.

With 222,000kms I'd be replacing the oxy sensor anyway (recommended every 90,000). They are very easy to access on the 6's - if you know someone with an e-series 6 you could borrow their sensor for an hour or so as a test.
The other thing I'd be inclined to do is have your injectors cleaned. FPR is possible but unlikely I think. Your plugs didn't indicate over or under fuelling? |

Also, your ISC kinda falls out of the equation once you're rolling so I'd put that last on your list for the moment.

could be faulty map sensor as well
have you tried to get the diagnostics codes out yet? |

I checked the Engine Off codes - clean as - but couldn't get the Engine On codes out. Will try again on Saturday. Will the codes tell me if the Oxy or MAP sensors are faulty (don't have my manual here)?
Plugs are tan on one side, almost white on the other, and clean. I use high-detergent 98 octane exclusively, and fuel injector cleaner every 2-3 months. Would I still get dirty injectors? How can a vacuum leak cause a stumble? If I keep my foot in it, the stumble stays all the way up the revs (slowly, and with an occasional backfire). Can a vacuum leak do that? Thanks again for your help. If I get it sorted on Saturday, I will let you know what the culprit was.

you might have water in your fuel this will also give you the stumble and miss fire as well

check ur fuel filter. replace that and see how it goes. if u said u used injector cleaners and also 98 octane fuel that means it could have been in a cleaning process for the first 2 years of driving and removed some deposits which now is stuck in ur filter. doubt injectors are the problem. vacuum leaks mainly cause fuel consumption but could also lead to the car idle funny. try the fuel filter and sparks first.
