Hey guys, I'm planning a project here in the Northern Hemisphere and I was wondering if any one knows how much a Barra 182 with all the ancillary equiptment would weigh, the engine I'll end up removing is around 525 pounds (238.14 Kg). Just wondering how much weight I'm going to save by putting that engine in it.

Thanks for any help guys, info on these engines is pretty well non-existant up here so I'll end up picking your brains on more than one occasion once this thing gets rolling and I import an engine.

Not much really...

In comparison, a bare long SOHC 4L weighs around 175 to 180kg.

Add the manifolds, pumps, etc, etc, you'd be hitting the 215 to 220kg mark from memory.

The barra engine has hollow cams and smaller pumps which would weigh alot less, but would probably be offset by the extra cam, a bigger head, extra rockers, VCT phasers, etc.

I'd put a guess and say you prob would end up with near the same as what you have now.

You could try ring a wrecker, like FTG, and ask. Im sure alot of these engines get sent around on pallets and transport companies would require the dead weight.

Yeah it'll be going into the Mustang. It'll end up being a complete one off once I'm done with it.

So the BA engine is a Cast Iron block and not Aluminum? Crappy but it'll have to do. Do you know if they ever made an aluminum block?

Also is there much of a crate engine program down there? I know that up here I open my "fun book" theres all sorts of crate blocks and complete engines I can order from Ford Racing.

lol... I just properly read your location, ringing a local wrecker might be a tad out of the possibilities..

All still cast iron with an aluminium head, strong and reliable. It's all us Aussies need. :D

If it was me, I'd be looking at a BF engine. The changes they made from BA to BF were minor, but they made it more fuel efficient, more powerful with a nicer torque curve. Much later BF XR Turbo engines were fitted with the tougher internals normally reserved for the FPV range and could stand a stack of power as a stock unit.

Can't tell you about crate engine programs. You can buy any part from Ford spares brand new if your pockets are deep enough. Chains, bearings, springs, etc, are all available aftermarket.

Unfortunately Australia doesn't have the market for the manufacturers to offer engines for sale in a catalogue like you guys get. They build what they need and no more really. We get the same catalogues you do, and if want to buy something, there a few specialist shops around we buy from who import direct from Ford Racing and GM.

Good advice, I'm not going for over all power here more of a WTF! when I pop open the hood but that fuel efficiancy thing is exelent and something I'd never be able to find out up here.

It seems like you guys have a heck of an aftermarket for these engines so I'm not afraid of that, and I can actually source locally an MLS head gasket as strange as that may seem.

I've got a ton more questions but I'll leave it at that for now, I do have some relatives there so once I save up enough money I'll pick up an engine, there are a couple Turbo engines on EBay right now that might be worth saving for a little extra longer for.

There was a bloke on the XR turbo forums who had a complete BF2 Turbo motor, all manifolds, turbo and ancillaries that had done 1800km (basically brand new) for $4300.

And someone else had a matching ZF 6 speed auto for it for $1500.

$6500 for that setup in a car like a Mustang which weighs almost nothing in comparison to our Falcons would be an absolute ball tearer!

A 182 Barra With all bolt-ons and flywheel weighs 235kgs just weighed one the other day
