Quite a loud whistling noise coming from my EF engine bay.. sorta sounds like an aeroplane taking off/landing. Hasnt seemed to affect my economy, idle is fine and the noise doesn't pick up with revs.

Any quick ideas before I take her in to get looked at?

U sure its not just ur turbo? lol just kidding..

its really annoying!! cant seem to find where its coming from.. seems to be from throttlebody area but cos everythin else is so loud cant be sure. you can fullon hear it from inside the car tho.. it also seems to disappear every once in a while..

yeh ive had that issue when it was NA.

its not your map sensor vacuum line, because you still have good idle and fuel economy

try tightening up all the clamps on the air intake :)

check for carbon around the head (near exhaust manifold)... carbon buildup = loose bolts

took the air intake off and still does it so wont be loose clamps.. woulda shot myself if that was it haha! will check exhaust bolts..

another development.. seems to go away when car is warmed up,, gahh wat a pain in the a**! gonna make it harder to find.

Tocchi, did u end up finding out wat the cause was prior to turbo? Or just whack it on n not worry bout it?

I got that same noise, except mine sounds like a supercharger. but mine is due to my cam choice and a few other mods, its N/A though, those that have heard it instantly recognise it.

Krytox, just checked that hose. Its on and tight.. grr. Makes it hard now that the engine is warm and the noise is gone. Ill let it cool down and check power steering pump, tranny fluid, etc. although I very much doubt it be that.

dc_todd ahhh I wish it was like that lol, but its not =( Sorta sounds like dropping missiles in cartoons! Loudest when driving and coming to a complete stop. But as said the noise goes away a few minutes after temp gauge has reached NORMAL (engine gets to operating temp, noise stays for a few minutes then goes away)

have you been able to diagnose if its bottom end or top end? top end and whistling? or top end and screaming? like metal on metal?

Bottom end, bearing?
If your box is shiftkitted, maybe its flogged and slipping when cold and howling?
Its a serpentine belt setup, so its not a belt slipping, PERHAPS, its idle tension tension bearings ion the serpentine setup? I have heard these whistle when the bearings are destroyed.

If its a mechanical whistle noise that goes away when warm, I would be looking at things supplied with oil.

I had the same prob in our AU but it turned out to be the intake mainfold gasket was half gone, letting lots of air in, really loud noise but I could not find the area it was comming from. turns out it was just under cyl one.

I dont know if your motors are the same but take a look at your gaskets.

Cheers, good luck
