FYI, i know the epa claims the test for the noise test is 2000rpm from 2metres away, but apparently the requirements differ for different models etc:

3650rpm, 500mm at a 45degree angle, limit 90decibels.

I went from a 2.5 straight through exhaust apart from the single large muffler with a set of pacemaker extractors (which i was defected with) to an xr6 exhaust manifold, 2 1/4 inch exhaust, the little muffler, the bigger one and a straight through tail pipe (standard) which gave me 85decibels at the above specifications.

Over loud exhausts, kinda :)

I believe the test RPM for falcon's in VIC in the early E series is 3375 rpm, and the probe should be a certain distance from the exhaust tip, i can't remember how much. You can find the test rpm & noise limits on the EPA site somewhere, i've seen it before.

I had my pacemakers, commodore 2.5" cat, one straight thru 2.5" muffler & i got an invite to an exhaust shop for a test, where it was found i was way above the legal limit of 90db. I had a redback 2.5" resonator & rear pipe from the muffler over the diff fit & i'm just under the legal limit now.

My idle noise is a lot quieter, which sucks but it still makes a lot of nice falcon 6cyl exhaust noise @ 5000 rpm, lol.

Cheers

lol im gonna be f**k if i get asked to do a noise test...

i have a tractor manifold at the moment but my cat is hollow (fell apart, not bashed out), my centre muffler has pretty much no sound deadening left in it and i have no rear resinator... lol

I thought it was supposed to be around where peak torque is?

Yep, its supposed to be at peak torque. But with so many modifications these days its impossible for the cops to determine where abouts peak torque is.

i got done on christmas day last year for an epa test ! ive just got herrod extracters and a 2.5" redback cat back, i had a flange put in just before the diff and a standard 2.1/4" section put in to quieten it down, which it did for me to pass by 1db :D then next day i had the old section put back in :) still got the standard section sitting in my garage at home, just in case it happens again !

Linkie to the EPA document on the noise limits of car's & test rpm's.

http://epanote2.epa.vic.gov.au/EPA/Publications.nsf/2f1c2625731746aa4a256ce90001cbb5/e9a3b54956ac6b18ca256d16007b66e8/$FILE/317.1.pdf

This is the current document the EPA have published, ford stuff is down on page 31 of the PDF for the EB, ED & So on falcons. It's an interesting read.

Cheers

Yeah :) I have also kept the stock 2.25in exhaust system in the shed for times like these..
