Did you change the drive gear over between the old dizzy and the new one?

I know you changed the head gasket but the symptoms still seem to be pointing to it or head... don't suppose maybe theres a crack in the head? It might explain why its ok initially then goes bad once its warmed up and the crack opens up? Probably not what you want to hear, of course....

Tearlejc you could be right, the car was running ok the first time i started it after the head gasket change after that it has been rough regardless if it's cold or hot or any other conditions.

What i have come down to is the head gasket again, one of the oil rings, the head itself or the oil seals in the head which i didn't change because i didnt have a valve spring compressor and i wasn't too fussed as the oil was not a problem before it was a water issue.

Don't know i have gotten to the point where i have had enough, i really don't want to take it apart again.

cjh um i turned it to the left with a allen key so i assume it came out and is correct, really could something like that make that much difference i never thought of it.

Wouldn't it make noise if it wasn't out or have i done something wrong.

Sounds like she's blown between pots mate.
Was the head shaved, crack tested, hardness tested?
Was the block properly cleaned and checked for variation, what was the corrosion around the water galleries like?
Were the chambers in good nick? Rings felt ok?
Everything wiped down and oil, dirt free before headgasket installation?
Did you follow the torque sequence and specs?
If anything else it could be a cracked inlet manifold gasket or vacuum leak. There are a fair few vacuum hoses and being a ford the engines are heavily reliant on their vacuum to run well.
Check every hose along it's length for splits, listen for hissing, spray suspect areas with carby cleaner and listen for changes in engine noise.

If the chain tentioner hasn't released it'll rattle on start up and whilst driving, quite noticeably.

And maybe double
Check your battery earth to the block and load test you're battery, even the best alternator can't charge a K.O battery

I did notice today that after i let it run for a while i turned it off and tried to restart it the cranking was slow and it hesitated to start for a second then it started, do you think that could be a sign of something?

When it is cold it starts quite easily.

Normally if it was blown it would be hard to start cold cos the coolant leaks down into to chamber whilst the car sits. But if it's blown between pots or cracked it could start ok cold but when heated up the gap would be larger making a harder start.
Did you get the head machined and all that gear I said, knowing this will really help the diagnosis.

Also what colored the smoke?
Usually if a engine blows smoke coasting down a hill it's the rings. Didn't accidentally forget the blow all the crap out around the rings with compressed air and wipe everything out did you?
A bit of old gasket or carbon stuck in the rings wont end well

I'm not there, so, all I can do is ask the questions, and give you something to think about or take a look at. What colour is the smoke ????....Blue is oil, White is coolant, and Black is too rich in fuel.

Pakrat no i didnt get the head machined and crack tested i was pretty much hoping for the best, all the cylinders looked good and pistons and i made sure everything was 100 percent clean before i started reassembly. The head gasket was really stuffed when i took it off so i assumed it was just that and not the head. I put a new inlet manifold gasket on it when i put it all back together and i am sure i have checked all the vacuum hoses but you are right there are a lot of them.

The smoke is blue and definately oil you can smell the oil on the exhaust quite strongly.

cjh i know and i thank you for your time and suggestions at the moment i am willing to try anything but it looks more and more like something major.

I tried to take as less as possible apart when i did the head so i didn't have any problems with things while putting it back together so i undone the inlet and exhaust manifolds but left them there things like that, the less the better.

I want to thank everyone on here for your time in helping me with this, you are all definate legends.

There is your problem, you didn't skim the head. I would say that the headgasket is not sealing properly due to the head not being flat.

Really it can go out of wack that much i thought it was only crucial to do it if the head was warped or really rough this one looks pretty good.

Oh well you are probably right, thats what happens when funds are tight and you want to do a quick job. Thanks everyone.
