How did you clean the bores ? The cross hatching is critical to oil control .

Ok another question, i have just removed the head again and noticed oil in the cylinders and all over the gasket so i am assuming that was the problem.
What i wanted to ask was the headgasket that i put on and the new one doesn't have open water galleries on the inlet side and only small holes on the exhaust side, is this right? Sounds kind of silly having water galleries on the engine and head and not having them on the gasket or not much. |

Oil in the cylinders can be just from the head oil galleries draining out as you lift the head off. The head gaskets are used as restrictors for the water flow, so as to make the water flow a certain way....the big open holes are for the removal of the casting sand, as are why there are welsh plug holes, they were where the cores went through to hold the water jacket cores as casting sand.

Hi Everyone,
Ok update i have just finished putting the new head on it's off an el xr6 that had about 100k on it, i got it machined and checked all good i also cleaned the block perfectly, completely level and smooth, got new bolts and vrs kit again and it looks great. Now i have a problem when i first started it, it ran fine just blew a little smoke nothing major let it idle for a long time, checked the water level and all was ok after about 30 minutes it started idling funny and blowing a lot of smoke and it sounded like it was missing, anyway it now doesn't start anymore again. Does anyone have any thoughts on this, it sounds almost like when i changed the head before. I did everything according to the book and other posts i found on fordmods, i just have no idea and quite over it really. Thanks for your help. |

Or could be the Tfi module on the dizzy, the smoke might actually be unburnt fuel because spark is being interrupted.
The module playing up when it gets hot |

So if it's cold then it should be like when i first started it today, if that the case i should check it in the morning to see if it starts.

Nope it didn't start it just keeps cranking and trying to start with the occasional backfire sound in the inlet manifold.
What does that mean? |

Ok another update i tried to start it again and nothing so just a thought it was sitting on an angle leaning towards the front passenger wheel so i pushed it back where it was more level and it started and ran but rough and still missing. Why would the angle stop it from starting?

Yep it definately has fuel in it and the tfi plug i checked when i cleaned everything in and around the distributor.
What i also did today was changed the oil and filter as the oil was really bad and really runny and smelt of fuel. I then started it again and it is missing but running at least, there also doesn't seem to be as much smoke as before i changed the oil but still has some smoke. Should i take the plugs out and clean them again to see if that helps, the last time i pulled them out they were covered in oil so it must be getting oil in the cylinders from somewhere and it seems to be the same with all the cylinders. The water etc is good same level as when i filled it up so it's still all strange to me. Thanks. |

From my own bad experiences with an EF falcon.. I suspect a broken oil ring!
