Hi everyone,

I need some help with a few things.

OK now i have just changed my head gasket because it died, was putting water into the number 1 cylinder now after install everything was fine idle was good no problems i took it for a drive and when i returned home the idle was rough and it was blowing smoke, mainly when it's at idle when driving it's fine as for the missing it seems to be intermittent sometimes it's OK and others it's not kind of like it has no spark momentarily and then returns the only way i can describe it is it feels like when you have moisture in the distributor.

Another thing is when i changed everything i noticed the charge was low so i replaced the alternator, now it is charging really good but when i turned it off and tried to restart it just cranks and it's telling me the battery is flat, less than 10v on the meter.

It is a 92 EB, any help with anything would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone.

Sounds like Battery failed for charge, or terminals not on tight

Is the MAP sensor connected/is its vacuum hose on? - thats the one on the firewall near the inlet manifold

The terminals are on tight, i checked it after i changed the alternator.

The MAP sensor i haven't checked will go have a look but from what i can see all the other vacuum hoses are on the heater tap ones and the two on the rocker cover. Am i missing any?

(Im assuming its MPI) - There is a black sensor on the firewall right next to the manifold. it has a Vacuum hose coming off it, that goes to the inside, middle of the inlet manifold.

Well here is something new i just went to check the battery, took it out and checked it with my amp meter and it sayed it's fully charged so i put it back in and started the car no problem, checked all the voltage charge etc still all good so why when i turned it off earlier it didn't want to start again all it did was try to crank and the dash lights went dim weird.

As for the MAP sensor i took the hose off and the car stalled so i put it back on and it was back to how it was before does that mean the sensor is working?

Check the MAP sensor hose, they split down near where they go on the intake manifold.
Also check your ignition coil, as they crack where the mount bracket goes on....very common problem.

OK an update, i checked the MAP hose and it's fine no cracks, i unpluged the MAP sensor wiring while it was running and the revs went up but it was still running rough.

I then checked the ignition leads and they are all fine and i changed the spark plugs still the same.

I am running out of ideas does anyone have any more suggestions. Oh i also checked all the vacuum hoses again and they are also all fine.

Thanks.

Check the condition of the small diameter water hose under the manifold (running next to the distributor). They can get a pin hole leak or split that sprays coolant onto the distributor causing the engine to run rough. I've fixed 2 engines with this problem.

Hi Shortshift i just had a look all good no leak or coolant. I took it for a drive earlier and the exhaust has a really strong smell of oil and only seems to blow smoke when it's idling or going down hill with my foot off the pedal.

What i am thinking is that one of the cylinders might be getting oil in it from somewhere and that is why it's idling badly and missing. Is this possible? What would cause it.

Not doing the head gasket right would cause that.

Did you have the head shaved? - did you use a torque wrench to tighten the head bolts?
