just be careful, the one i got is the best condition ex-taxi I've ever seen, unless you like to do a lot of repairs to your car yourself there a pain in the a***. Some of the others i've seen are dodgy as s**t, pop rivits everywhere holding things together and what not... i've heard that with some of the late e-series wagons, they fit ea rear sends on them if they have been rear ended and s**t like that...

Well, panels are easily fixed.. the main prob with getting an ex-taxi that that (obviously) they've been used HEAPS!
So, not onyl has the engine traveled 300 000+ kms, but so has everythign else, tranny, rims, suspension, belts, etc. Now, unless you're doing a total overhaul.. as in, making it a show car? I'd go for soemthign in better nic. If you are however thinking of jsut modding it up, putting on a body kit, new rims etc. check out the auctions for damaged vehicles, an EF/EL with some front damage can be great (assuming everythign is still in place and fine engine wise). It takes thousands off the price, and u can just whack on an XR conversion kit and wholah!

My dad owns cabbies so i have a little of knowledge and can shed some information on this subject.
Most cabs will have in excess of 600,000kms some will come good condition some s**t. But i have seen many in excess of 850,000kms so buying a 600,000km one will give you a couple of more years of driving, thrashing and cruising. I can say you should start looking for one with a replaced gear box, as some cabbies don't replace but recondition. Another important thing try and look into the treatment of the ef like if high quality oil was used if coolant was spared (mixed with bad ratio) and so on. Happy cab hunting lad.

ok well what i am looking to do is aquire a vehicle and do it up on the side over a fair period. what i want to do will include color change respray, suspension, wheels, bodykit, engine rebuild for turbocharging, diff, brakes and a bit of interior work so from that i figured that the transmission would be the only other major concern...
(pretty much all work will be carried out by me and a mate for some weekend entertainment) what sort of prices have people on here paid for an ef el ex taxi? |

Paid a bit over 3 grand from a car yard for mine. Just gone over 600,000, body was straight as, no dents, no missing paint, no rust, just been recarpeted inside and thouroughly cleaned, was starting and running well, cept when i took it home and relised it only had a 3 speed automatic box in it (doh) - but that's fixed now! The problem with them is that there annoiying/frustrating, like ever couple of weeks or month I get some small problem, such as a coolant hose busting or something, sure it's cheap and easy to fix, but it's a pain in the a***. I don't think I'd go down this road again, specially not when I look in the paper and see AU's in car yards for 12 grand! And BA Fairmonts for 25! |

It was a car dealer in town, he also has a rental company and mechanic of his own and a couple of taxis, it was one of his old ones. |

i've seen many ex cabs been restored and look mint condition....
here are my tips if your intrested in a ex cab! -Make sure the car is an owner/driver (not having 50 drivers on it a week) -Ask to see if any parts have been replaced eg: transmission, diff, power stearing etc.. -Also see if its a tickford gas system (for no hassels) and also it runs petrol. I hope this helps you out Cheers!

some of them end up running the car straight gas even though it has petrol facility..... the difference is that the injectors will need replacing due to being blocked and also the petrol pump since being dried out and not in use. Thats why the owner driver cabs are better because a majority end up using petrol once in a while!

Most of the XR or Fairlane taxis are on Petrol, which most Futura and GLi's seem to be duel or straight gas. From what I have seen! There's an NL Fairlane Ghia, V8, and a few minor mods (e.g. SS Induction, K&N Air Filter, Nice wheels, Etc.) taxi getting around, I'd like it when they finish using it as a taxi! |
