After a lot of thought about whether or not to get rid of the reso and get some real noise out of the EF, why not have the best of both worlds!
I want the car louder so I'd like it off. But I do do long distance travelling sometimes and droning is something I can do without. And running round cutting it off n welding it back later would be a waste... So I came up with this idea... - Cut the piping on each side of the resonator - Weld exhaust flange setups to the setup on the car, the reso each end, and to the 2.5" pipe each end. - Then unbolt and swap reso and 2.5" pipe when desired. This way I could have it drone free during long trips, and loud for other times. What do you guys think? Is it legal? Has it been done before by anyone? And where's a good cheap supplier of exhaust flanges n black 2.5" exhaust piping??? ~ Matt

Just by looking at your diagram, seems like a pretty sweet idea. Just make sure those welds are strong and i don't see any problems.

the best exhaust noise control ive seen is a throttle butterfly in the pipe, with a mountainbike shifter inside the cabin to control the flow of the pipe by moving the throtle.

It's a good idea, that will work.
Alot of people make up a straight thru pipe to replace there Cats/cat, so they can run race fuel at the track. No reason the same can't be done with a resonator, just make sure the straight thru pipe is the same size, and that it seals properly. I'm not sure if exhaust gaskets can be re-used or not.. ?

i hear you can get a switch for that s**t and control it just by flicking the switch in the cabin, go to ur local exhaust shop and ask them bout it and see wat they say.

Yeah the throttle butterfly idea crossed my mind too. This way would be more direct with flow, but also more fiddly than the butterfly approach. ah decisions... I'm running Pacemaker 4480 comps, hi-flo cat, redback 2.5" straight thru 1 muffler / 1 rear reso.

I still think welding flanges onto your reso is a good idea.
Easiest and probably cheapest by far. You can get stainless exhaust flanges off Ebay pretty cheap. Then you just gotta find a little bit of straight 2.5" pipe, which shouldn't be hard, ask your local exhaust place for an offcut...

Yeah I hated that drone. So I went back a year later and got them to cut out a section of 2.5" inch pipe, and weld in a piece of 2" pipe with 1 muffler. Really quietened it down a bit, loss slight power and revabilty, which s**t me. But I noticed today when someone had a drive of my car, that some of that throaty exhaust sound has returned a bit, but not into the cabin.

a freind of mine has a valve like thing in his exhaust if he gets pulled up all he does is turn a knob and this valve acts similer to a throtle body, in that it looks the same, and when it shut the car runs at legal noise.
this thing works, he's running a AE-86 corrola, with just a cannon, and with this thing shut he passes EPA tests. |

Having a good look under the back of the car just before, I think the flange option is the only option.
The reso takes up all the room in the body under moulding. And I dont wanna be running a pipe under the reso/spare tyre well...it'll hit things :S and be too low. Thanks Steady...ill check out anything on ebay flange-wise Great help so far guys...keep it coming!
