Hey fellas,
I have been procrastinating about what size exhaust system I want for my car. I want to do some decent mods in the new year. Such as: Cam & Head. forced induction of some kind. The size of exhaust that comes to mind is a 3" mandrel bent system with headers. The issue Im having is that if I dont decide to go the forced route, will the exhaust system be too big/overkill? If I decide to stick with a 2.5" system for now will that size be too small? What difference would it make if I just chose the 2.5" system for now but went forced later on? I hope Im conveying my dilemma sufficiently.

From what most people have been doing.
2.5" for NA and can be pretty heavily modded and still be enough. 3" for forced is what most people will go for with the 4.0L

thanks GeZza200.
I think I should have rephrased what I meant. What I should have said is I'd like the option of being able to go forced induction but dont want to overkill it if I dont go down that road nor do I want to have to get another exhaust if I do go down that path. I guess I need to make a choice, but it would be good if I can get away with a 2.5" system ok enough to deal with say a raptor SC should I choose to get one.

If you're looking at head work + cam NA, go a 3" anyway, and definitely 3" with boost.

Is this (NA) due to better performance characteristics? Can you explain to me what benefits I would see with the 3" over a 2.5"? Thanks

i dont think 3 inch will be that much over kill with cam and head work. but go 3 inch with boost.
i would just wait until the engine work has been done then get the exhaust sorted, then bolt on some boost.

Your bottom end will suffer ever so slightly with a 3" over a 2.5" on a NA motor.
If you had work done to the head like higher compression and porting etc combined with a larger cam your car will want to breathe more - therefore have more exhaust flow. With a 3" you'll pick up a few kw in the top end just because it flows better. Like I said, IMO with headwork and a cam a 3" isnt overkill. |

yeah, there was a good thread on this not too long ago with a fair bit of good info...if you look through a few pages it shouldn't be too far back

friend of mine went from a 2.5'' Lukey to a 3'' Manta on his VS Commodore, and f**k me its probably 5 times louder. i can hear it from almost 4 blocks away.

to keep 3 inch anywhere near legal you need more mufflers/resonators than a 2.5, so kinda makes you wonder if its worth the extra weight and money.
exhaust is a bit of wank factor too mind you, the factory exhaust inst that bad. its by no means meant for high performance but its not an amazing experience going to 2.5 or higher. its the exhaust manifold thats the issue. Those headers belong on a 1930's russian farm tractor. a 2 1/4 mandrel bent exhaust with twin resi's and a hot dog sounds rather nice, and doesnt go too bad if your keeping the stock manifold. exhaust upgrade+stock manifold= noise increase (maybe 5% more top end) exhaust upgrade+aftermarket headers= noise and performance increase.

Thanks fellas for the tips.
FWIW Im not looking for noise. In fact I want to have as little noise as possible without restricting flow as much as I can. I was thinking of having 2 large hi-flowing mufflers, even 3 if I need to and a resi along with headers. I just dont want to be caught out should I decide to head down the boosted path.

Personally I don't think there's any real need for anything bigger than 2.5" unless you want a big turbo setup. 2.5 is still a very big pipe and will cater for most applications without compromise. It's also way cheaper to keep a 2.5 quiet if that's what you're concerned about. But I look at it like this:
You want a blower later on. It might happen. You want a cam and head work. It probably will happen. You want a huge pipe that will never need upgrading. When you get a few quotes, you then decide you can live with an "average" exhaust upgrade. It's a certainty. No offence intended mate. We have all been there (or are still there)

A 3 inch on an N/A Falcon can potentially be detrimental for performace too. The reason why most people get a 2.5 inch for N/A is because it is the most appropriate given the characteristics of the I6. You could always sell your 2.5 and buy a 3 when you go down the forced induction path
