I've just had my complete exhaust system replaced with extractors, a 2.5" metal Cat and a 2.5" system with straight through mufflers.
Since then I've been getting the rotten egg smell occasionally appear. It doesn't do it all the time but is generally noticable when stopped at traffic lights with the window down or again when in a city traffic type environment. I haven't really noticed anything under acceleration, it seems to be more prevelant under lighter throttle openings and pretty well only noticable with the window down. Apart from the smell the car runs like a dream with the new exhaust. Power delivery is now smoother and it has a noticable increase in midrange torque. Fuel economy was always good but now it's even better. Given the increase in performance and economy I'm not too fussed about having this smell .... though it would be better not to have it. Could the smell be a trait of these new "metal" type cats compared to a normal ceramic cat? .... or is my engine some how "out of tune" now with this new exhaust? Any thoughts .... should I be concerned that something is not right?

Give the exhaust time to carbon up. New cars do this too.
It's normal, it'll go away.

It could also be the glue stuff they use on it - forget what its called and what it was exactly but mine had it for about a week, now its gone

dude is your car on lpg?
rotten egg gas smell SHOULD not come from a petrol car regardless if the exhaust has been replaced or changed

Also, might want to check for any leakages just in case one of the gaskets wasn't put on properly.

just leave the engine running and have a sniff around, you will find it soon enough.. kidding, just a new system smell it'll fade as data_mine suggested.

Although Unleaded has less sulphur than Leaded Petrol, the sulphur sometimes accumulates in the catalyst and is then burnt off under rich conditions. This results in a release of hydrogen sulphide (rotten egg gas) and that distinctive smell. Thanks Chris ... so a bit of smell is normal and we can blame the new cat .... I can live with that
I just wonder if chosing a metal cat over a ceramic one would have any thing to do with it as well?

It means your cat is working perfectly. if its a leak around the flange, you should be able to hear it.

Does it make a hissing sound when you've got an exhaust leak?
The exhaust on my old EA made a faint hissing that sounded like it was coming from the cat. That exhaust was fitted professionally. The AU, we put the exhaust on and that noise is still there, but it sounds a tiny bit louder. I usually hear it while accelerating up a hill. Sound like a leak to you guys?

Start the car from cold and run your hand over the exhaust joints before it gets too hot and see if it leaks.
You will feel the gas on your hand if it leaks

Our EA had the cat s**t it's self & it stank of rotten egg gas!
