The extractors I got for my FG XR6 arrived today. Went to shop and paid for them. I was assured that I simply had to take the old ones off, bolt new ones on.....
When I got home I prepared to start pulling my car apart. That's when I see a small piece of paper that serves as the instructions. Cutting and welding is involved in attaching the pacemakers to the OEM Cat -_- I double checked my car to be sure and there is definitely no way this thing bolts straight in.  So how much do you guys reckon is acceptable on average for someone to charge to stick 'em in for me? |

100-200 bucks give or take would see this through.
Exhaust joints aren't so cheap these days.

damn!..... you know what, screw it, I'll wait until I can borrow the tools and get a mate with some experience to lend a hand.
I've done all my mods myself through learning by doing, why not this?  Thanks guys |

haha it's certainly gonna be interesting! I just hope I can get my hands on a welder so I can try it.
It's simple in theory. Cut the flange off, dump old extractor, weld flange onto end of cat so that it aligns with the extractors.... It's always the simple stuff that turns out the hardest. Tickford_6 even if it takes me days it's better than that 200 to me. Because that way I learn from experience and can do this sort of stuff with confidence in the future

oh no I have experience with welding! good god, I'd be a bloody idiot to try something like that without any prior experience! :O
I will admit it's not years of construction work like some mates, but that wont be a problem, because I'll be able to turn to them for help if I look at it and realize I've bitten off more than I can chew |

It's welding a new flange on the cat that's the problem. Extractors will be safe, the cat may not be. If you have never welded before, I suggest you practice with scrap metal to get some sort of technique going. Also, I suggest not using an arc welder, TIG or MIG will be easier with a lesser chance of blowing a hole. Usually neater too if you know what you're doing. Either way...good luck. I suggest getting a spare cat to practice on...no doubt you'll put holes in it if you don't have someone to help you. To add to that, aligning stuff is a pain in the a***, especially if you don't have a hoist.

I modified a spare cat for mine to work on my extractors, it took 2 days but that was a fair bit of mucking around, smoke breaks, etc. etc. I even made my own 2.5 inch flange, welded it all up and it sealed. The hardest bit, was as phongus mentioned, aligning it without a hoist. I did mine laying on the floor and was sick of it by the end. Make sure you get the proper gaskets before you start, I thought I could do with the old ones that were on it, nope.
As you know how to weld that should be a good benefit, I did mine with an arc welder so it's not impossible, just more care has to be taken to avoid blowing a hole in it, as I'm sure you know. Good luck.

If you are going to try to tack the flanges on the car make sure you take the terminals off the battery

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice guys. I'll definitely be making the effort to track down the tools, parts and guys that have experience to help me do this.

It's amazing how much mechanics charge for tasks so simple. Maybe fit it all up then just get them to weld it? I wouldn't pay more than $80 unfitted just for a simple weld. Doubt you'd get a good weld DIY. |

Doubt you'd get a good weld DIY. Just clean the welds up with a file, some sand paper and make it smooth . How else would you hide a bad job?
