Always make sure to use the Bosch Module, not any of the other no name brands. When it's fitted it's critical to have both the back of the module and the mating surface on the dizzy clean and heatsink compound properly applied (the module should come with a little packet of compound - Bosch ones do for sure).

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER USE A SECONDHAND MODULE!!!!!!

And also you apparently should replace the gizmo inside the dizzy too whenever the module is replaced (Hall Effect Device?).

Those modules are notorious for failing - it's the heat that kills them - they should never have been mounted where they are. years ago there was actually a Class Action law suit against Ford in the US over those modules failing because of faulty design (ie. being located where they are overheated thus causing failure).

The module itself generates a lot of heat when it's operating and then they mount it on the dizzy which is right next to / on the engine!!!
Now I believe cars using that type of module in the US have them mounted well away from the engine and on top of a big heatsink - I was seriously looking at mounting mine away from the dizzy but never got round to it - I just carry a brand new spare in my glovebox just in case.

Oh, and when mine died it was in the friggin drive thru / drop off zone at a Hospital!!!

Lol, no good.

I dont' have to worry about this exactly on my EF right? Different set up isn't it?

That's right - EF's are ok as they're coil pack (EDIS - Electronic Distributorless Ignition System) - only EA, EB, ED and EL have the Ignition Module (TFI - Thick Film Integration).

I knew they were different, but not all that other technical stuff, so thanks.

I thought Ford went back to the dizzy in the EL because they had nothing but problems with the coilpacks in the EF. Then they fixed it up for the AU didn't they?

What goes wrong with the coilpacks?

Yes that's quite right too - I just didn't want to confuse things - the EF won't suffer the TFI Module failure as it doesn't have one - I never said coilpack wouldn't / couldn't have problems of it's own tho ;-)

Someone else might have better info, but from what I can make out there is / was an issue simply with the reliability of them - I'm not absolutely certain how coilpack faults show up either.

- ie. with the TFI problem the engine dies completely - this can happen either on the run or - apparently more commonly - when trying to start the engine - and it can be intermittant - but when it's happening, like I said - the engine will not run at all - but with a coilpack I'm pretty sure you can not only get complete no running engine - but also all sorts of strange symptoms from reduced power to rough running etc. In that respect the TFI problem is overall more straight forward I think.

actually the ef coilpacks arent bad at all, the main reason they went to dizzy is cause it was cheaper.
