Mate if it wasn’t meant to go there, then they would of never put the numbers on the gauge. LOL

You will be right bro; just don’t make a habit out of it.

I have had the tacho needle off the gauge briefly once or 2 twice, numbers stop at 6000 Rpm the needle didn’t LOL, go the unlimited SOHC V6

For that short amount of time i doubt you would have done any damage.

I never new the potential of damage caused to free reving and engine. Is it because of the sudden change in speed putting stress on the engine?

Think of it like this, under load the pistons are working into the bore, free revving they are floating around.
It would take a bit of time to cause any major damage though, but then that would depend on the condition of your engine.

Have any of you guys ever drained the oil and water and bricked the throttle till it threw a rod?
If not then try it, lots of fun lol.

Yer many a times...1979 Sigma, 1990 EA, and just today a 1980 celica...the ea lasted about 5 minutes before the engine stalled...we thought it was dead because the motor wouldnt turn over, waited about half hour and she went again...good old fords

No Damage would be done. Cars love bouncing limiter cause just like some of us humans the motor like the noise haha.

we once drained all the fluids out the motor on a XF wagon it ran for 2 hours flat out rallying and then around 1 hour or so full throttle free-revving. it ran out of fuel 2 months later after it sitting out in the paddock in the weather put sum fuel and a battery in it started right up. only last 5 minutes until cam seized

is doing it in Park any different to Neutral?

Either way, one day its going to throw a piston through the side...personally i cant wait to see it happen

I've hit 6500 in my corty a couple of times...
First time the flywheel came loose!
It might have went further than 6500...
but the factory tach only went to 6 or 6.2, and it kept on revving!

Only time I've really had anything go badly wrong was the time I bought a 4spd XC with over 300thou on the clock. Holding it flat in first, with a 350holley and extractors, would do about 60km in first... with 3.23 diff gears. For the third set of treads I fitted a tacho, and found out it was revving out to 6500 to do 60km in first!

Spat number one rod that day! Just after I dropped it into 2nd...
If only id tried 2nd from the start..!

i did a simalar thing in my corty doing a burn out went for second but it didnt want to go in and i thought it was so i dumped the clutch and gave it full revs and she went bang tacho went straight off the end ended up exploding the water pump and the fan blades separated (i found 2 of em )(out of 4) i replaced the water pump and fan and the battery had a hole in it dunno how lol and she was still strong for about 2 months then piston number 6 melted bugger

Yeah usually belts go walky walky when we've trying to destory an engine by free revving it.

Shirtless guy in the picture looks pretty chuffed with his efforts tho!!

And yeah... free revving is bad as these engines are capable of producing HUGE amounts of power - if the gears arent engaged then all that energy has to find somewhere to go...

And what better way for a kilowatt to spend its afternoon than a relaxing cruise through the side of a block on top of someones conrod or pushrod :)

Just an update to my own post, i was just standin outside and the guy at the bottom of my street came home. pulled up in his driveway, hit the rev limiter a few times...then there was thing double sorta loud tick noises then he shut the engine down.

this was followed by him jumping out of his car, yelling a large amount of obsenities, and popping the hood. needless to say, 30 mins later the hood is still popped and he's clambering round underneath it. he keeps startin it and stoppin it. its back firing a lot and really doesnt sound too well

hahahaha, my wildest dreams have come true
