When I got my Lukey headers fitted, they put the stock/factory headshield back on, they kinda altered the shape to fit snuggly on the new headers. I've noticed that most other people seem to remove this after fitting extracotrs. Should I aswell? I'm thinking it's not a good idea as I have the L.P.G. pipes and converter above it.

I would have thought it was a good idea, in helping shield from heat. But then again I'm not sure what the gas system looks like???

Aftermaket extractors cool alot quicker than the original cast iron headers, therefore no need to really keep the shield but without seeing what the gas convertor looks like id probably leave it on to protect it. Last thing you want is a nuclear explosion under the bonnet. :P

I'll be making a custom heat shield for my paceys, I figure the less heat the better.
Hopefully it'll basically just direct the heat under the car rather than sitting in the engine bay raising intake temperatures!

hmm, well Ive never had that heat shield on, and at first I thought it was an aftermarket thing. Ive got pacey's and Ive never had problems with heat really, or maybe just haven't noticed. Im sure it wouldn't make that much difference to the intake temp, heat still rises, and will somehow get around it.

In saying that if you got some kind of GAS mixer and stuff, and if they left it on when they installed I guess it was for a reason. And just let it be.

In my mind the only difference is cosmetic.

Cheers

i have no heat shield on my ef, i wouldn't mind one, as my intake is made of 3in mandrel bent steel, and can get quite warm.

it does help with your thermal effiency if you have your headers heat shielded with glass wrap style products, however there is also a similar effect by getting them HPC coated. The comment on the headers cooling quicker than the standard manifold is true however you dont want this as that heat is being transferred to the surrounding atmosphere, ie the engine bay walls, intake manifolds and the like. As a rule of thumb, for every 2deg c drop in inlet gas temp at the head = approx 1% power gain. This may not sound like much but most of up stick in K&N filters for a bugger all HP gain. Any way the idea of leaving the heat shield on would be a good idea IMO cause it will prevent heat soak into un wanted areas, and keep the heat where it should be, and where it will provide the most benifit

There's nothing to gain from taking it off (except maybe cosmetic appeal?), so unless you really care what it looks like, you'll probably get better performance out of your engine with it on....

makes me think now.......
i reckon you could get the xr bonnet vents and hook up a small fan to blow the air in the engine bay.
you coudl make it work either way (blow in or blow out), but there wouldn't be much of a gain to be had but slightly lower engine bay temp.

I've read before that this makes them weak or something...
I guess I'll just elave the heatshield on then. Purpose of this thread was just to find out if there is a reason why everyone else seems to take there's off...

The point of the vents is to let the hot air out, not suck it in, you want a scoop or soemthing to do that...

that's why i said you can hook them up either way.
