Has anyone experienced this problem?:
When weather is hot I can't turn over the engine at all, it is completely dead.
I discovered that if I keep the ignition turned on fully as though starting, and at the same time I thump the gear shifter, it starts.

I have tried changing the ignition switch and also just changed the neutral safety switch, but problem is still there.

It appears to be an electronic problem.

Any Auto-Electricians or Mechanics who can tell me what needs replacing.

Thanks

Mark

Does the car start if you jam the t/bar hard up in park or when moving it around in neutral gear? If so you need to adjust the gear selector shaft on the exhaust side of the box.

No, have tried every gear and is the same.
It is as though there is no battery attached at all, until you thump s*** out of the t-bar! Sometimes a small thump works. Today for example about four hard thumps.

There is absolutely no problem in winter or in the morrning, problem recommences when weather warms up or car in hot sun for any lengh of time after turning ignition off.

It is better than any kill switch or imobiliser!

Someone out there must have heard of this.

Appreciate help.

Thanks

Forget the gear shifter for a second.. how new is the battery?... also the starter.. is she in good nick?
I had a LPG clevo that wouldnt start after a run.. like it was dead... the heat from the LPG just killed the starter..
But your starter is on the opposite side to the pipes...
Lpg heat can be pretty intense.. checck al the wires from the starter, maybe the earth wire.
Probably not your problem.. but i changes those 2 things.. never had a problem after that.

Have you replaced the starter relay?

The fact your thumping the auto t/bar looks like a inhibitor switch fault which isolates the starter relay. But as you said you have replaced it.

The next thing I would look at is the body control module(smart lock) and check the starter motor for anything loose and earths.

Two words - Smartlock module. This is a very common problem on these models and can be fixed quite easily if you have some basic skills.

Grab another ED Smartlock module, swap it and do the learning procedure. Usually is the problem in these.

Confirm it by smacking the dash above your left knee, around handbrake handle area while turning the key, should start.

TFI Module on the side of the distributor.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I have had this problem for about 3 years now. Have tried thus far:-
*About a year ago I tried another body control module (red one) above hand brake = didn't fix it.
*About a year ago I tried other relays eg from the head lights = didn't fix it.
*Last week, starter motor fizzled and I put in a rcond unit.
*Battery is good.

*TFI Module, doubtful as when starts this motor purrs.

Is the Smartlock module'' the one I mentioned above = the red one above the handbrake? I mentioned I changed this before, I ended up removing this and putting back the original as the replacement one had a fault where the central locking wouldn't work.

Could try another 'Smartlock module' .

Any other thoughts.

TFI Module can work fine and then become faulty, it will then work for some time and repeat the same problem days later.

Your comment about once started runs really does lead to either BEM Fault, or the Neutral start switch.

Youve changed the switch, did you also adjust the shifter?

If not, have you tried putting the shifter in neutral, and while holding the key to start carefully moving the shifter an amount forward, and then carefully doing the same backward? - If it starts after an amount of movement then you just need to adjust the trans shifter.

Banging the shifter hard isnt going to actually resolve anything, however it might have caused a larger amount of play in the shifter making the problem worse.

In an ED im positive the smartlock module is seperate from the BEM. Id put money on that being the problem.

As I said, give that a go.

An ED does not have a BEM as such, it does have a Central Controller which has nothing to do with Smartlock and is a seperate module.
