hey guys, a real urgent one here, as its a holiday today ive got very limited time to buy parts that i need
basically, yesterday i was driving along, engine cut out, wont start again... no spark getting to the leads, but the coil has power. Has anyone had this problem before? and what ended up needing replacing? im guessing replace both dizzy and coil, but is there anything else i should be wary of?

it will be the tfi module on your dizzy, either buy a new one plus the hall pickup sensor or get on 2nd hand dizzy from the wreckers or buy a new dizzy. it's up to you.. $50-$100 for 2nd hand dizzy, makesure it doesn't have a worn bush on the shaft.(shouldn;t feel sloppy when rotating it by hand).
cheers.. |

yeah a guy i talked to reckon it could be the TFI module as well... being a public holiday the only place around here thats open is Autobarn, and they have one there for me.. how hard is the TFI module to fit? as well as the hall pickup sensor?

Are you getting a good spark out of the coil?
When mine failed it was the coil but I still had a spark at the coil, it was just too weak too get a spark to the plugs.

If okay, do the same with a couple of the plug leads (not just one). Night time is perfect for checking for spark (and tracking due to dirt or grunge as well). You may just find it's just a lead/cap/rotor issue. Use the extra time to gain your thoughts and logic - faultfinding when you're under the hammer can cause you to misdiagnose - and cost you big time in changing components that may be okay.
You can't rule out the TFI, but then again . . .

replace DISTRIBUTOR with a NEW one.
You can buy the complete unit including dizzy, tfi and hall effect for about 150 bucks.. while your at it buy a coil aswell. there only 30 bucks and t hen you can be sure your car wont cut out again. good luck swapping the distributor its fun. |

You know how annoyed youd be if it was just the centre button on the cap wasnt touching the rotor....

for those who have busted a ignition module, can you feel the slack in the dizzy shaft at the rotor end? might be an easy way to diagnose a dizzy/tfi module collision (the usual cause of a ign. module failure)?

after replacing dizzy + coil, im GUESSING it was due to the centre pin that had corroded and broken off, and wasnt making contact... but both coil and dizzy were in ordinary condition, and with the new engine going in next week, im still glad they've been replaced... well its back on the road, and a few more days til ive got something decent under the hood
