So I've had a flat spot from around 2200 rpm to 3000rpm for quite a while, so today, after having my car on the gas bench and getting a efficancy % of 86% I decided its time for some maintenance.
So, new plugs, leads and o2 sensor straight up. My old o2 sensor was RS, my plugs were the wrong ones! (From a eb series2) only differance is the electrode is about 3mm longer and they are a different heat rating. The plug holes were so full of sand on cyl 3,4&5 that the plugs couldn't even go all the way in, no idea how I missed that when I put them in. My old leads were topgun. So they were s**t anyway. And now she starts like a champ, has a lot larger power band, no flat spot!! And even sounds slightly...throaty-er. Not a bad out come for half a hours work and near $100. 6xplugs-$20.46 NTK o2 sensor-$55 NGK leads - $38.50 And of course some chemtech CT18 car wash for $8. So she can be shiney tomorro. Sweet! |

What's wrong with TopGuns? I haven't had any issues with them ever since I bought them...
Good to see you fixed your problem though. I'm pretty curious as to how you got sand in your plug holes in the first place :S

I put my car on the gas bench at work and it was rich on idle, rich on cruise and lean on WOT so I just figured itd be that, the o2 sensor was already in the extractors when I bought them 2nd hand too...
The sand was cought in the recess into to the head, on the lip, so I got small amounts of rag, rolled them up, put them in the holes, loosened up the sand with a small screwdriver, put my face down near it, closed my eyes and blew. I have no idea how the sand got there, but I never noticed it there before. as for topgun leads, they are crapola. |

Actually when I first got the car I did some circles in a paddoc that was nearish to the beach. Probably from that.

I'm pretty curious as to how you got sand in your plug holes in the first place :S I had Top Gun leads they died after about 50000km. Started to crossfire between leads etc.. Their resistance is very bad too compared with Champion Steel leads (Jim Mock uses) which are $25 cheaper. The longest Top Gun lead when new measured 15Kohms and the same Champion STEEL lead I re-installed was 8.5Kohms. Every lead after that was a huge improvement over the top gun leads, car started better, went better at full gas( no hickups etc) can't go wrong...

I guess if they ain't broke, don't fix it. Once mine die I'll try another .

I was talking with the floorsupervisor/ main mechanic at work and he was telling me how he has seen many issues with topguns, crossfiring, plug contacts comming out, insulation braking down prematuraly.
He said he'd rather use the bulk pack leads we get that have no brand name. But I guess they can't be s**t in every application otherwise they'd be out of business. After the new leads, plugs and o2 my fuel efficancy at cruise has gone from 86% to 95% but at idle is still low. ~70%, "apparently" that's about the best youd be expecting from a 90s era straight 6. New tps may give me a few % increase but its about the norm. |

Well I had 2 of the problems with 1 set and id believe anything he says. He is certainly not a knob. Probably knows more about cars then anyone on this site.

Yea? I love the sheet. Only thing that takes the tar off without having a bug and tar remover.

It also usually takes off any wax that is on your car so the paint isn't protected and will weather fairly quickly
