The EF engine that will be going into my ED came, of course, without a distributor. As I am putting a log manifold on it and "downgrading" it, I am putting a distributor in.

My question is, what is the trick to finding #1 TDC if I cannot turn it over (with a starter motor) to find the compression point or can a use a plug in #1 to do the same thing? I would prefer not to buy some expensive tool.

Any suggestions welcome.

Cheers
RD

the easiest way to do it is pull the tappet cover off so you see the cam an valves an that an then turn the motor over untill number 1 cylinder is on the rock ie both the inlet an exhaust are closed then look down on your harmonic balancer to find excatly tdc (that is if your harmonic balencer isnt stuffed and slipped)

Thanks... so #6 doesn't come in to play here, isn't it up at the same time as #1? This is why I asked about the compression stroke.

BTW, in all my years of owning cars I have never had a harmonic balancer slip - ever. Why does everyone say that thse ones slip?

Pull all the plugs except no.1. Turn the motor clockwise by the crank pully bolt untill you feel resistance continue untill the timing mark aligns with tdc.

That's clever.

The last way i did it was to remove no.1 and have a bit of fluid on my finger stuck in the hole so i could see which way the airflow was going. Maybe not as good as your method.
