Hey guys.
Just wondering if I should fit my PH4480's myself when i get them (posibly with a new cat aswell) or get the shop to do it. I'm quiet handy with tools (I converted my diff from a SS to an LSD last month) and am keen to attack it. All i'm concerned about is if I get a new cat, is it all just a bolt on affair? And I remember back in my VL days, you were guarenteed to break studs. Would a 97 EL with 130,000km have the same dilema? Thanks for ur help.

im just going by watching a mechanic to it on a freinds gli I6 , but fairly easy you just have to take of the pipping from the throtal body to the air box and the plastic over the power steering cap and move over the trotal wire so you can fix them in place and then when you put the headers on your have to put that metalic sorta thing between it with some sort of silicony stuff and the cat needs welding i think.
sorry i dont know the names of some of this stuff i just wanted to tell you that u had to move some things over so you could fit them properly lol im sure some one else would be able to explain it better lol. if u dont mind asking how come u got the 4480s and not the 4499s and how much did u get the 4480s for ? goodluck |

You shouldn't. My bolts came out nice and easy, and went back in just as easily. |

piece of cake to install, did mine late last year. had to remove the intermediate shaft of the steering column, not a big deal though. you shoulnt have any trouble with the manifold bolts. had the cat fitted for $30 at the exhaust shop. good luck.

piss easy to install the extractors/ unbolt the factory ones and bolt in the new ones. as for the cat, if your going to use the factory one it will need to be modified to suit the extractors. with new ones they should bolt straight up will need a pipe to join it to the rest of the system

the only problem you'll have is there is no bolt in cat. they all need flanges and a bit of pipe welded in.
hang on a sec i better make that a litle clearer. we wouldn't want some one getting the wrong idea and thinking i was saying to weld a bit of pipe in the cat. the cat is not long enough to fill the gap so you'll need some 2.5 pipe to put in there was well. or if using the stock one. you'll need it to modify it. |

When you buy the cat, just ask the exhaust shop to weld on some 2.5" Flanges for you, and if you're handy with a welder, grab 2 more flanges and a length of pipe so you can make up the pipe to fill the gap yourself. Or measure and get them to do it.

you will need welding skills and stuff if you want to fit them cause the exhaust and cat needs modifling

Mate I'm pretty handy with a spanner too but I would just get the exhaust place to do it. I was contemplating the same thing when I got my redback exhaust and Pacie comps.....then I thought "fvk it, I'll just pay to have it done" and I am so glad I didn't screw around with vehicle stands etc and waste half a saturday doing it. You will have to weld the cat flanges btw if you do it yourself. Get them to do it that way they give u all new gaskets, exhaust sealant, everythings tight, nothing leaks or rattles and it's done in about and hour.

I was aware of the cat, i'm going to be getting a new one, as this one could be stuffed. So the new cats dont have flanges already? And where abouts does the bit of pipe need? I just guessed that Extractors + new cat with flanges would be all i needed

The front cat flange should have come bolted to the 4480's, mine did. As Tikford said, undo the intermediate shaft on the steering column so you can get them in then bolt them up with your old gasket if you didn't damage it. From here you''ll need to cut the inlet of your cat at an angle and weld on a length of 2 1/2" pipe to run to the aforementioned extractor flange. You'll then need to weld some 2 1/2" pipe to the outlet then weld a new flange to the end of that to join to your cat back exhaust.

i just put extractors on my ef the other week one thing i found was that i had to make a bracket for the power steering pump, on my ef it had a bracket going to the excaust manifold to suport the pump so.... had to make somthing to replace it
also its a bit of a pain getting the cat flange welded in the right spot, didnt help that my welder was a few km away and had to drive there to do it when i pulled the manifold off i took one bolt off when it was a bit warm, not a good idea i look off about one turn of the thread in the head, not drastic but ... |
