if you're ditching the optima ill have it ;) i recovered one of mine from 5 volts.... long story left it in a car i didnt touch for months and thought i had killed it... blue top (deep cycle marine) best batteries ive ever used... pricey but good i think... tooke me a week to get it charged up again, very slow low current charge on a variable power supply...

disconnect the battery from the car, charge it overnight, take it off charge (assuming its finished) leave it sitting for a few hours fully disconnected from everything and then check the voltage... should be 12.5. what type of optima is it, yellow, red or blue?

good luck hope you get it sorted!

check what the voltage is with the car running too, as stated earlier it should be 13.8-14 volts... check to see if there is anything draining the battery while the car isnt running, turn everything off, shut the doors and check how much current is being drawn (disconnect one battery lead and put a multi-meter between the battery and the lead, make sure its set to the 10A range and that NOTHING is on in the car) shouldnt be using much at all... otherwise what part of the SE 'burbs are you in? im in burwood...

I learn every day, the only Optimas I had used were golf balls, they didn't respond well to Inox either.
Your point about the diodes allowing current to 'drain back' is a good one, I had just raised that possibility on another thread here tonight and forgot to add it for him as well, brain fade..
Cheers

Ive allready told him to check the Static Drain.
I think he should stop worrying about buying a new battery and address the root cause of the problem.
Somthing is drawing current.
Deep Cycle batterys dont mind being fully discharged. There designed for that.

to an extent thats true, but if you cycle a deep cycle - flat - charge - flat - charge - it will still kill it faster than normal use in say a car... they just handle it a lot better than a normal battery... and fully discharged is only 10.5 volts...

how old is it? would be a shame if it was dead, they cost a bit!

got a spare battery or know anyone with one? id try swapping another battery in and see how you go...

Apparnlty the battery is only a year n a half old (as i havn't had the car long), in saying this it hasn't died on me today or yesterday, but then again im still scared to play music with the engine off as i don't think it will last that long:S
