I recently changed the oil on my new (to me : ) ) stock EF to penrite HPR15. I immediately noticed the difference - revs out much easier and is much more responsive.
However, it does seem to flat spot first thing in the morning, which it never did with the old oil (not sure what it was - assuming 20W50 mineral). My first guess is that the HPR15 is too thin. Should I be using a thicker oil? I could only find a ryco oil flter - is there any chance that a better filter would help? BTW, the engine has 160,000 ks on it. No leaks, smoke or any other problems. TIA Ben |

IMO there's nothing wrong with the ryco Z9's, it's VERY easy to find worse.....

the difference in the preformance of the car or how it runs really wont change much at all even if you use thinner oil. or would it make ur car have a flat spot, unless ur hydrallic tappets are worn or blocked.
oil filter will make no difference either, id say most likely that the injectors throttle body idel valve need a good clean out and proberly a major service to fix ur flat spot. unless there is a fault eg afm, tps ect |

Thanks for that. Any reason that it would have only shown up after the oil change though?
The flat spot disappears quickly - before I get 100m or so down the road. Only ever happens when the car's been sitting for more than 12ish hours (ie is fine after sitting in the carpark at work all day). It's also fine if I leave the car to warm up for a couple of minutes first. Ben |

well engine will be warmer and so less fuel will be needed, timing wont be as retarded eg. i bet if u do as i said before it will run smooth as cold or hot

OK, I'll take your word
There's a decent chance that it's beyond me to do it myself - and I see you're in Canberra too - any recomendations for a decent (pref northside) mechanic? Ben |

well cleaning out ur throttle bosy and idel valve isnt hard and if u got a little bit of mechanical mind then u could do it. just use some degreaser and when ur done use a bit of grease spray like wd40 or hhs2000 to lub the spring, and valve ect. just take ur car to get the injectors done at any place that has a injector cleaner.

Sounds simple enough, might give it a shot
Stupid question - I'm guessing the wynn's etc injector cleaner additives arn't gonna help me? Ben |

It has nothing to do with your oil, more likely the engine warm up cycle. Engines never run to full performance when cold.

cars will virtually never idle as well cold as they will warm (yeh i know, mega generalisation there)
the ecu tries to compensate tho, but basically its nothing major.

I have the same problem in my ef.. but not related to oil.. mine likes chokes (floads) for like the first 30metres even if i let it idle to warm up or not.. then leave it sit for 30 minutes after driving and it will do it again and i have had the injectors replaced with new ones and have had them tested.. and the fuel flow was also tested and it is find.... have you also tryed to reset the ecu to..
